This is the coldest I have ever experienced without snow. Two inches of ice in the stock pond, everything else frozen solid except for the auto-waterer in the coop. It has only half an inch of ice in it...

My hands were so cold from breaking up and removing the ice from the stock pond I wasn't able to hold the cup of coffee I made to warm 'em up. I had to sit on my hands for quite a while, first. The flock is very happy I cleaned out and refilled the two kiddie pools. Kate the goose warned everybody away from the first ready one so she could drink and then bathe in it.

Everybody is finding sunny spots just to hold out their wings to warm themselves. Gorgeous day when one is just looking out of the windows!

This happened one time back in the 1970s when I live 7 miles south of Red Bluff. I was cold long enough that my cousin walked across a pond!

Got the lights under the tomatoes turned on, tomatoes covered, Pool pump on, outside hose on a tad.
Got down to 23 this morning and I lost 2 of my 3 pepper plants. Makes me sad....they were even covered but it was just too cold.

Got 10 eggs today. My Marans laid TWO in a row. One was seimi soft shelled the other hard.. She hadn't laid for a few days... but I know she laid BOTH of them... she's the only one that lays that dark.

I was counting my little Icelandics. Looks like I have 6 total. 2 are pure white, but I imagine they'll bring on some other colored feathers as they mature. I'm hoping they are not all roos!

Time to go cover the geraniums in the front yard. They look like they may make it.

I'm getting tired of doing this EVERY NIGHT.

Wednesday night I shouldn't have to. wahoo.

Mary - is that recipe on your blog? Looks yummy. I hope Monday you get some relief.

Jason - I'm cold just thinking of you out there working on the fencing in this weather. Good luck with the move.

It was 25 here this morning up against the house. I have to change the battery in the other unit that is away from the house, so I can get an accurate temp. The waterers inside the coop were frozen solid as well - and they rarely freeze. Gave all the birds hot water. My 8 week old chicks are troopers. No heat and they are cruising around like it's no big deal.
lol you do what you have to. this place is on a ridge but in a low spot on the top. the bottom part is chilly. I know this cold weather does not happen all the time but it was 19 this morning. It has not snowed alot as far as inches but since taking keys it has not rained here only snowed. 4 times.

I also got the rest of my post holes dug. Hardware store was closed or I would of set them all in concrete so will have to wait till next weekend. If it sets Sunday I will add the fence.

Good job getting the holes dug today!

Do you move in on the First?
when the chicken area is done we move lol. We have moved 60% of our stuff. the things left here are appliances , clothes and food. I wanted to be in today but the coop and run have taken to long. Once the run is done we can move quick. Oh and we have this very old giant paper weight. ( I mean family heirloom piano) I need to bring. I may have to go under the house a support the floor under it , it weighs so much.
Today I dug the holes and made 5 runs in the truck and also helped my wife paint some. I will be glad to get a few days off and go back to work lol.

I helped move one of those years ago. It took 5 of us to get it out of the house. It was a heavy old thing but played beautifully.

You will probably need to have it tuned after the move.

I hope the rest goes well!

Oh good grief. The donkeys recognize our car on the road in front of the house. They start hee-hawing for treats before we even turn on our street. Really, do they look like they need treats?
