Scary incident here yesterday.
My welsummer coop is in my orchard, but all the leaves are off the trees right now. I heard my welsummer rooster raising a racket, so I looked out the window and didn't see ANY hens, but I saw him out there. Then he hopped up into the coop, still squawking. I saw some movement and thought that there was a hen outside, but then it moved funny and I realized it wasn't a chicken.
My dog and I went running up there and that HUGE hawk was hopping around on the ground under the coop. It flew away when my dog got close and she chased it. (good girl) Hopefully it got the picture.
Thank goodness my rooster is smart enough to get all the hens in and then get his own butt in the coop too. (instead of fighting the hawk) I only have adult chickens in that coop, so I doubt that the hawk could have carried them off. The hawk didn't hurt anyone, but it has to be pretty darn hungry to attempt that. I can only hope that it will go away. Just proves to me that it was the right decision to net my other coop. I'm not able to net this one though, due to my fruit trees.
I will, this is the same looking hawk that was getting in my other run and got my babies. I've never seen a hawk this big before. I think it's a red shouldered hawk because it looks exactly like this:I had one right in the doorway of one of my little coops - - - eating a broody silkie.![]()
I am so glad your dog chased it off! Watch for it again. My hawk came back 3 days in a row, and got a silkie the first 2 days.
I thought of that too, plus Mary needs oxygen to fly. TSA would be all over her like flies on manure. House visit by Dar? He has been saying he misses his friend up here.If she can stand to be molested by the TSA agents again.
