Stella's Social Club

We went to New Jersey this summer with the DH on a business trip. None of us have ever seen fireflies, having lived in CA all of our lives. We were outside at a BBQ and saw them - we were amazed and thought it was so neat. Everyone that lives there was looking at us like we were crazy.

I too am stuffed from corned beef and cabbage. I tried it in the oven this year. I will never boil a corned beef brisket again! Yummy!

I braised mine this year too for the first time. I won't go back to the crockpot dark side, LOL.

I'm guessing spring has arrived in the south.... I went out on the porch last night and I could see fireflies zooming around the yard! Made me want to go find a mason jar

I've always wanted to see a real, live firefly. The closest I've come is the Pirates of the Carribbean ride at Disneyland, LOL. I've said many a time I could live in the little shack boat in the swamp, with the gentle banjo picking and night sounds. My sister and I once discussed having someone toss our ashes into the boat after we die, LOL. Then my son could take his kids (he doesn't have any) to Disneyland and say....................look kids, grandma lives there! LOL But the way Disneyland cleans, I'd be in the recycle pump or a vacuum cleaner within an hour, LOL

Thanks for the visual Deb! All I can think of is my vacuum cleaner which is currently full of dog hair. Opt for ashes tossed into the sea!

Anyone have any luck rehabilitating an egg eater? I haven't gotten an Isbar egg in weeks. They are all eaten everyday and the mess is disgusting! I only have five girls in there so I am busy moving them to other coops in an effort to figure out who the culprit is. I thought it was the youngest but she spent a day with the Icelandics, laid an egg and left it alone. I am keeping her with them one more day to be sure. Meanwhile, back at the Isbar coop the eggs were all eaten. I'll move the 2 younger blue girls next. I doubt it is my splashes because they have been with me since I first got Isbars. I'll move them as a last resort.

Anyone ever find a way to break them, short of a roll-out nest box? I have built-in nest boxes, accessible from the outside and don't plan to deviate from that. Anyone who can't get with the program may just have to get period!

Had Corned beef and cabbage yesterday that I baked in the oven...ok, the corned beef was baked...it was wonderful!

Had a frosty morning, but the sun is out and looking lovely now and up to 41.

Born and raised here on the Oregon coast, I've never seen a firefly!

Sorry, don't know anything about breaking an egg eater...

I sautéed the cabbage in butter instead of boiling and it was awesome! New tricks at my age? Who knew?

Kelly, I became part of the problem today instead of part of the solution. I took Tucker to Home Depot!

In my defense, we never went into the store, just the garden department. Call Nick.

the Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland is my absolute favorite "experience" and for the exact same reason: fireflies, softly lapping water, music in the background. Even as an adult, I wanted to move into a little shack there.

Interestingly (to me, anyway) my friend and I were discussing this weekend what to do when I die. If they find me before the flock gets hungry....just got derailed hy that thought again... Sorry...anyway, it's my belief the world doesn't need any more space used up by burials. Cremation and sneaky scattering on my property. That would help the roses and possibly even help make nice, hard eggshells.

Because, of course, when I'm gone, my property will become a shrine and someone will continue to take care of my flock. ;)

We just talked about this on The California Northern Thread! One person posted that the culprit was A Blue Jay caught on camera! Those nasty birds get 25% of their diet from protein and a large part of that comes from raiding other birds nests. If the Blue Jay cracked the egg, the hens would come by and eat it.

If not from outside causes, like Blue Jays, over 90% of egg eating comes from weak egg shells. Solve the egg shell problem and there will be not more egg eating.

Hens test the shell for viability so they peck the egg. If it breaks, it is not viable so they eat it. Also, adding in more fake eggs or golf balls helps. They will peck it and think the eggs are good.

So to stress the point, egg eating hens are so rare as to be a very unlikely cause of your problem. Keeping the egg predator out or getting the shells back to harder will solve the problem. Look into things that make egg shells weak.
