I hope you have safe travels home Kathy. I'm glad you had some joy in the service.

Oh Dear....who knows how all this will work out...should be interesting....and brooding these chicks in 105+++ heat after the first week will prove challenging...![]()

We just had a heat wave where our temps were 110 for a couple days. The truck mirror thermometer said 117! Dry heat, like the desert.
I have multiple age groups of chicks. The 2 week olds are being brooded in a big stock tank in the main coop. No heat lamp needed! They started panting mid day. DH put a fan in that coop to get the air circulating better. I put an ice pack in the brooder and the chicks were standing on it. That seemed to relieve their panting.
I put the newly hatched chicks in a small portable brooder. I can put it outside, in the shade, during the day. They are comfortable that way. I bring them indoors at night, put them in a small room. I'm using a small lamp with a regular light bulb for heat at night. If that's not enough, first thing in the morning when the air is a little cooler, I put a heat pack in there.
The older chicks, including some of Kathy's F4s, free range during the day. They hang out under the Mulberry trees & rose bushes and are quite happy. I put a sprinkler on the lawn and some of them will stand under the spray. They all are tolerating the heat very well.
