Cape gooseberries will grow wild in the mtns of NC. I planted some one yr and they come up ever since. I was not that fond of them. You can start with seed in the spring. They grow about 1 1/2 ft tall. You can not eat them until they fall from the bush. Otherwise they can make you sick. They must be fully ripe. They remind me of a gooseberry but not as sweet.
Cyn. and all we are staying in today and hoping the power stays on too. We have freezing rain and sleet. Its 30 degrees. Thankfully we also have a nice wood heater in case the electric goes off.( we use the heater every day because its such a nice warm heat.) Stay safe and warm everyone

Looks good, but it's the first time I've ever seen the word "Clafouti". Glad you said it's a baked custard! My DH says call it what it is. For instance, do NOT say panini around him. It's a grilled sandwich.

I am with him ! Samich is allowed if you are under 5 and have trouble with the whole word.

Mary you are an incredible cookess, and photographer. So many good ideas you give us ! Thank you.

-13 this morn, +2 now at 913, life goes on. And pleasant thoughts of AZ and West Texas. Life goes on here in Northern MI , but not without protest !

Stay warm y'all !

i make cherry clafouti now and then, and also an apple/lemon version -- Mary, would love to know your base recipe, since i've never been quite satisfied with mine! the various recipes i've seen vary HUGELY with regard to how many eggs, how much flour etc.

The recipe is on my blog. Yikes I a still in bed typing on my ipad. Tucker is snoring next to me.

We have the wood stove, though wood has run very low now. Thankfully, after the fire, we installed a gas range rather than the electric that was there so we can cook. DH asked me to fill the bathtub so if we lose power as many in south GA have already, we can flush the toilet (we have electric water pump so if electric is off, so is the water). We have filled some 2 ltr bottles for taking to the chickens if need be. No chicks or incubators right now, though I do have the five broodies, with the first two due in less than a week. Should be on the upswing by then. We currently have about 2", but it's snowing steadily. Temps are holding at 30*, so at least it is not that cold.

OMG we raised the tarps on the coops today and were they nasty inside from the deluge. There wasn't a lot of leaking but the wet birds and water through the pop doors made a gross mess. I tossed all the eggs. We'll need to clean the coops really soon but I can do it myself since the Polaris is back from the shop. I load the shavings into the dump trailer and take it as far as possible from the house and dump it. The ground will be too soft for a few days so I'll have to wait. I also need to build some little awnings over the pop doors to keep the rain from blowing in. Will I ever get these coops the way I want them?

Coops are never done! They are like a painting that you are never satisfied with.

Cyn, my dad was just diagnosed with stage 4 inoperable brain cancer. My sisters and I have been making arrangements to take him home, and we hope to have him for a while longer - the doctor thought 6-12 weeks

. It is nice to have a place to come away from all out worries and read about everyday stuff. Thanks all you guys for keeping things sane. I can not say enough how much I appreciate my friends for taking over the house, dogs, cat, chickens and horses while I am gone.

I am so sorry to hear this. He will be so much more comfortable surrounded by loved ones at home, I hope.
What a sweet picture! He looks like a special guy.

My FIL's tests came back finally. He has both stage 3 lung cancer and leukemia, so add that to his COPD at 82 and.....
Oh I am sorry that he is going through this. I hope he can remain comfortable.
