Stella's Social Club

Skye is still in the nest box where the tiny blue eggs were laid. If she is still there tomorrow, she's getting some Icelandic eggs to hatch!

Does anyone use a brooder plate? I got one of the Premier ones, but the instructions are in Dutch and German, neither of them my native tongue. Just wondering how high they should be set initially? Any dangers I should be aware of?

Just getting ready to pull the chicks out of incubator 1. 2 chicks so far in the other, a self-blue orp and a bantam barred Rock (unfortunately a cockerel if the head spot ones are boys).

The chicks need to be able to get under it but not high enough to smush them. The chicks are supposed to push up into the silver plastic when they are cold. It will need to be raised about once a week.

I have the Brinsea eco glow and they usually quit using it by week four.

I use the Eco Glow. You'll want to lower one side almost to the floor of the brooder but leave a little room for chicks to squeeze out of they are getting smothered. I used to put one loge edge all the way to the floor and once had a chick smother all the way in the back. Anyway, just be prepared for a mess on top when they get old enough to climb on it. I tape puppy training pads to the top so all I have to do is tear it off and toss it when I clean the brooder. I really like these versus a heat lamp. It is much more natural, gives them the day/night feeling, uses less electricity, etc.

WE WANT PICS!

The first of many like this.

First food photography class opened up last night. I watched four lesson 1 videos on my iPad in bed during the night. Now I am tired, excited, confused, over whelmed, and nervous. The level of skill amongst the 19 students in this class is amazing. I keep telling myself it's a learning opportunity not a contest.
