Stolen Horse--Man is BACK in jail!

Ha ha ha... Just so you remeber when you are nervous ROPO... Someone better be filming because we out here in cyberspace live with you and through you!!!!! You go girl!!!

Okay, it's been years since I was in a show ring and I'm aware things change rapidly. I was just wondering if they still black the hooves? It sure makes the horse look crisp for halter and even the other classes. And if you haven't heard of Show Sheen you should check it out. It is the greatest stuff! Repels dirt for up to a week after a show too. And if you have white socks, if they poo in the trailer on the way to the show and get it on the sock, the green will come right out.

I believe they do, but his hooves are white. I'll probably use a clear polish instead of black.

I told DBF and he called my dad and my dad told his wife who called my grandma. I called my aunt to get advice. EVERYONE knows now...expected it but luckily only Dad and Barbie (stepmother) will be able to make the drive.

I've started getting him cleaned up for the show. Using Premier Rose conditioner and will try to start whitening up his socks. His tail is a lost cause. I'll be able to brush it out (broke 2 brushes...*SNAP*) but the inner part of the tail is black. His mane is a nice even color though!

I hate the idea of cutting his mane...I like the long look. I'm debating doubling it over and banding it instead of cutting it then banding it.

Ropo, is there another show before your target date? If so maybe you could take Max just for the experience of being there and also see how horses are groomed, what type of outfits ppl are wearing. Even if you didn't take Max it might help. Just a thought.

The target date is Aug. 28. I'm taking him to a club show for experience so he doesn't freak. I'll be looking everyone over closely and try to get ideas. But mainly, it's to get Max accustomed to the atmosphere.

Use Mr's White's blueing for clothes washing for his white socks. Don't use too much or his socks will be BLUE!! but you can use it to whiten. Also after you wash and before the show, if he is still a little yellowy use cornstarch and just pinch a little and rub it in, you will be amazed. try it before the show so you can see how it works!

Hooves need clear polish even if they are streaked black and white, use clear to shine it all.

The tail SEEMS like a lost cause but it is not, just takes time...Use a curry comb on his tail to get the mess out. kind of flick the outside area out of the way or tie it up higher on his tail so you can work on the inner sections. Also you can use Herbal essence in the pink bottle( the cream rinse) it is awesome for tangles; put it in his tail and comb through BEFORE you rinse it out.

What else can i think of....i will ponder that and get back to you. LOL good luck and remember the biggest point, HAVE FUN!!!

When my daugter showed my appy in 4-H the trainer we were going to, who is an appy/arab/qh judge, said to use black if the hoofs are black and clear if they are white or striped. That is my daughter and mare in my avatar. The mare was a yearling there, she's four now and thinks she is the queen of the land.

ROPO, I show all the time so ask away. I Show Halter and have done Showmanship as well, at the moment I do not have a Showmanship Horse and my Halter Gelding is too Big to turn well and be pretty doing it.
I Black my horses hooves, he is a paint and 3 of his hooves are white. Also and white markings look better clipped close, when you bathe after he dries slightly put cornstarch on the white, rub it in well. This keeps dirt from sticking to it. Laser Sheen, it is a concentrate, spray him after you bathe and let him dry, also spray the tail. Get a can of World Champion Pepi Coat Conditioner. This is going to get long, I don't mind explaining everything, if you have questions, email me.
You also need a soft body brush and a harder one, keep them separate and use only for shows. You also need Clear Face Highlighter, I like Silverado or Ultra. I am not sure what all you are familiar with so if I am telling you something you already know, sorry.
This is my routine:
Bathe, scrub white markings twice (I use Cowboy Magic Shine In Yellow out the second scrub) I use any cheap shampoo for everything else. I prefer to clip after a bath and will usually bathe quickly a few days befoer the show, let them dry them clip, bridle path, ears, muzzle, any place else and the white markings. I use a #10 for bridlepath and under the jaw. Usually a #15 for muzzle and ears.

Show Day or Day before (depending on time of show) I bathe, scrub white twice. Sweat scrape, then spray with the Laser Sheen. Really spray the tail good with it, easier to comb out and cuts down on frizz. After the stop dripping and dry slightly use the cornstarch and really rub it in to the white markings, let it stay. Then I band, after banding I comb the tail out. I put on a slinky hood and leave them for the night if show is next day or however long until ready to go if same day.

At the show: I get them off the trailer, then go check in and sign up. Come back and take off the slinky hood, fix any misplaced bands. Take the stiff body brush and brush them off. I then brush the excess cornstarch off the white (another good thing to take is either a green spot remover or alcohol, just in case, also some rubber gloves to protect your hands)
I then take a little hand held sanding block (you can get at WalMart it is like a sponge with sand paper on it) rub the block over the hooves to smooth, a rag is good to have and rub over the hooves after that. I then black the hooves, do a light coat on each and come back with a second coat. You can get a Hoof Polish Enhancer and spray them after they dry for a super shine (Ultra makes this too)

I then take my soft body brush, spray the horse with a light spray of the Pepi, let it dry a minute, then brush down with the soft brush. This gives a shine, plus lays down any hair that is puffed up from the sun. I spray the tail lightly with Pepi as well, this will give a real shine, I make sure the tail is brushed out good first, then kind of take my hand and fluff the tail a bit. I will also take a littl vet wrap and wrap the top of the tail until just before I go in the ring, this smooths the top of the tail.

A rag, washcloth etc and a little mineral oil or baby oil and wipe down the insides of the ears. THen put on the Show Halter and use the face highlighter. I get some in my hand and rub my hands together, then highlight the eyes (top of eye and bottom) then the muzzle.

A last minute check before going to the ring, any dust is lightly brushed away with the soft brush, make sure the nostrils are clean.

If you need anything else, let me know.

as far as the tail goes use a good quality human shampoo and conditioner, when the conditioner is still in his tail... by the handfull what I always do is pick the tail apart by hand. sometimes going 3 strands at a time and undo all the knots and brambles or whatever else they manage to get in there. for all my friends that show walkers and morgans this is the only way the tail is done, they actualy never even use brushes on the tails to avoid breakage.
