ROPO, I show all the time so ask away. I Show Halter and have done Showmanship as well, at the moment I do not have a Showmanship Horse and my Halter Gelding is too Big to turn well and be pretty doing it.
I Black my horses hooves, he is a paint and 3 of his hooves are white. Also and white markings look better clipped close, when you bathe after he dries slightly put cornstarch on the white, rub it in well. This keeps dirt from sticking to it. Laser Sheen, it is a concentrate, spray him after you bathe and let him dry, also spray the tail. Get a can of World Champion Pepi Coat Conditioner. This is going to get long, I don't mind explaining everything, if you have questions, email me.
You also need a soft body brush and a harder one, keep them separate and use only for shows. You also need Clear Face Highlighter, I like Silverado or Ultra. I am not sure what all you are familiar with so if I am telling you something you already know, sorry.
This is my routine:
Bathe, scrub white markings twice (I use Cowboy Magic Shine In Yellow out the second scrub) I use any cheap shampoo for everything else. I prefer to clip after a bath and will usually bathe quickly a few days befoer the show, let them dry them clip, bridle path, ears, muzzle, any place else and the white markings. I use a #10 for bridlepath and under the jaw. Usually a #15 for muzzle and ears.
Show Day or Day before (depending on time of show) I bathe, scrub white twice. Sweat scrape, then spray with the Laser Sheen. Really spray the tail good with it, easier to comb out and cuts down on frizz. After the stop dripping and dry slightly use the cornstarch and really rub it in to the white markings, let it stay. Then I band, after banding I comb the tail out. I put on a slinky hood and leave them for the night if show is next day or however long until ready to go if same day.
At the show: I get them off the trailer, then go check in and sign up. Come back and take off the slinky hood, fix any misplaced bands. Take the stiff body brush and brush them off. I then brush the excess cornstarch off the white (another good thing to take is either a green spot remover or alcohol, just in case, also some rubber gloves to protect your hands)
I then take a little hand held sanding block (you can get at
WalMart it is like a sponge with sand paper on it) rub the block over the hooves to smooth, a rag is good to have and rub over the hooves after that. I then black the hooves, do a light coat on each and come back with a second coat. You can get a Hoof Polish Enhancer and spray them after they dry for a super shine (Ultra makes this too)
I then take my soft body brush, spray the horse with a light spray of the Pepi, let it dry a minute, then brush down with the soft brush. This gives a shine, plus lays down any hair that is puffed up from the sun. I spray the tail lightly with Pepi as well, this will give a real shine, I make sure the tail is brushed out good first, then kind of take my hand and fluff the tail a bit. I will also take a littl vet wrap and wrap the top of the tail until just before I go in the ring, this smooths the top of the tail.
A rag, washcloth etc and a little mineral oil or baby oil and wipe down the insides of the ears. THen put on the Show Halter and use the face highlighter. I get some in my hand and rub my hands together, then highlight the eyes (top of eye and bottom) then the muzzle.
A last minute check before going to the ring, any dust is lightly brushed away with the soft brush, make sure the nostrils are clean.
If you need anything else, let me know.
