What about contacting the local humane society about this. Not to speak to the court in any way, but for them to check on the horses welfare. It's possible the DA could get a court order for them to do so, it's the sort of thing our humane society has done, and would safe the judge some trouble and time possibly.
I think a letter writing campaign to the judge could be seen as trying to influence the court which is illegal, no matter how hard people try to sound neutral or encouraging, or just wanting action in general... even if it isn't seen as trying to influence per se, it could just irritate her so no matter how hard she tries, she could get grumpy. If that were to happen, then she'd be obligated to recuse herself if she thought it would affect her decision... another delay.
