Stubborn case of Bumblefoot

There's been no change so I'm taking my rooster to the vet on Monday. They're going to have to figure something out because I am out of ideas on how to treat this.

Try to get antibiotics from the vet and anti-inflammatory medication if you haven't tried that yet. My girl is slowly getting better with antibiotics

Mine is a little better. I've been working on it for two weeks. She's been so good but I am getting tired of this and I'm sure she is. I have soaked her foot in hot soapy water, Epson salts and now in that Tricide Neo for a week. The only thing I can say about that is it seems to have brought up some of the infection for me to clean out. I am finally getting some little white chunks out and puss. Before it was nothing but blood and felt stringy/gritty in the wound. Swelling is down some. Not finding any black/dead tissue in the wound like I saw in a video posted on BYC. I did buy some surgical tools that I saw on the video on amazon and that has helped in cleaning it out (biopsy punch, curette to scoop out stuff). I am getting so grossed out and tired of this. Good luck with your chicken. Her wound is different than the others'. The others have a plug to get out but this gal doesn't and a lot of swelling in the area/foot. Keep me updated.

It's a bit odd that you are still having to drain pus from Bumblefoot even after surgery and a 3wk course of Baytril. Did the vet remove the core/kernel when he lanced the foot?

Being confined, it's possible he may lose a little weight. I would cut the treats (fruits/veggies) to about 5% of his daily intake to see if that makes a difference.

I thought I read somewhere that no systemic antibiotic would work on the wound; that the wound site has to be treated. Seems like that may be the case since her rooster isn't better after being on Baytril? I haven't tried Baytril but may try that if I can figure out if it would really work.

@nessa.morg: Yes, I've been using antibiotics (Baytril) and the anti-inflammatory (Metacam), but neither seems to be helping much. I just finished cleaning out his foot and I did manage to squeeze out a long and sizable core. I can't imagine that's all of it, but it's progress. I'm hoping over the course of the next few days, prior to the vet visit, I'll be able to get more and have the vet go in and clean up what I missed. I'm glad to hear your gal is doing well. It's a hard thing for you and her to go through.

@Betsy57: I'm right there with you. I've been at this for a couple months now. My roo and I are both tired of it. Because Baytril is a systemic antibiotic, I've been treating the wound topically with silver sulfadiazine. That's what my vet has recommended. Both are good stuff, but I'm questioning their effectiveness after such extended use. When I got the core out this morning, I had to squeeze really hard on the swelling between his toes. I bet if there's a core, that's where it is on your girl too.

Yes, the wound site would need to be treated as well and pus/core removed in order to heal. Antibiotics give support to the system to help fight infection, but will not "dry up" chicken pus which is a semi-hard cheese like substance.

I looked over the thread - in a nutshell, your boy is not responding well to allopathic treatment. Fortunately, for homeopathy this is a really easy case and I'd like to help, @Betsy57 is there a thread for your girl?

Best outcome: complete recovery
Worst outcome: nothing happens

You would have to buy a homeopathic remedy (under $10) from a health food store or online

I'll take whatever suggestions anyone can give. I have two hens that have a different style of bumblefoot I guess. No plug like I have gotten out of other chickens' feet before. This is swollen under and between toes and on top of the foot. Just now starting to get a little puss and chunks of little white stuff. That finally after working on this for two weeks.

Well, I worked on my gal again tonight but no puss and nothing to pick out. The curette I got is very good, just nothing in there to scoop out. I guess I will leave her alone and see what happens. The swelling is down a little bit. Maybe if I leave it alone and give it a chance to heal the swelling will go down.
