Stuck Egg! Urgent!

My 1.5 year old crossbeak hen was attempting to lay an egg. It has been months since she last laid. She was pushing for a while, but she stopped almost completely. While she was pushing, I could see her egg, and I can feel it through her skin. It’s right there, but it is stuck. How do I help her? I have soaked her and given her 2 tums so far. She pushes occasionally, but all that comes out is a light colored liquid. What can I do?

Can you get a disposable glove, and lubricate it with KY or vaseline, insert a finger into her vent to feel for an egg? If no gloves, use a clean finger. She may have something other than an egg, or a huge or soft shell egg stuck. Try to get her drinking water.

I have already felt for it with a gloved finger, and it is an egg. It feels large. It is just behind the vent. I will try to get her to drink water. Thank you.

She’s attempt to eat oyster shell, but she is weak, and has crossbeak, so it’s been unsuccessful. Should I feed her another tums?

Aim for a total of 600 mg of calcium a day. Look at your Tums bottle. If you get to a store pick up calcium citrate with D3, since that is more quickly absorbed. Try lubricating her vent. Don’t soak her sink she is very weak. A warm humid room on a towel would be best for her. If a vet familiar with birds or chickens is available, they can usually get an egg out with equipment.

I lubricated her vent, and she had some really big pushes, but it’s still stuck. I don’t think we have a poultry vet around here.

Can you feel the egg up her vent with a finger? If so you can gently try to rotate it. You really don't want it to break, but sometimes the egg isn't overly large just sideways.

You can also try gently massaging from the outside a few seconds at a time to help it along. Keep an eye on her face if you do this and stop if she starts panting or closes her eyes.
