I figured becouse of there smell, smells like bad skunk pee, LOL
And i know some wilds will stay clear if they smell dog pee or something.

after seeing those pretty 'boys' and knowing all your animals i would be very concerned that those coyotes are now smelling the recently killed birds and know where to go looking now!

last time i was over there i couldn't smell (had a cold) those boys and someone mentioned it to me!

they certainly looked formidable though!

Actually I've had fellow BYC'ers tell me that my animals were instigating trouble, and bringing the neighbor's dog over on us because a couple of chicks (lightweight, fly better than adults) had gone over the fence and gotten killed by the neighbor's dog!!!! I really couldn't believe it!
I told the neighbor no hard feelings over the dead birds because the bird had flown out of my pen, that's NOT the dog's fault. I clip wings, and the fence is 6' high, but the teenage chicks are so light it's HARD to keep them in 100% but I do my part --- unlike some dog owners.

It's not my fault if someone else can't control their dogs - I didn't blame YOU because I couldn't control MY birds that escaped (though I tried) so don't blame ME when you can't control YOUR dog!

My mom told me the geese were getting near the rd, so i was on teh porch trying to scare them back in, but they would not move at all, which i saw weird and then i saw my poor baby showgirl in the middle of the rd running to the other side and told jose to get her back,
And i said that weird why is she going over there for the first time,
Jose said just when he went out to get the showgirl out the street he saw the neighbor juts freakin walking in teh yard like nothing and then her stupid dog grabbed my showgirl, ahhhhhh

Untended dogs are a problem.

Had the neighbors two pit bulls shot a few weeks ago. Wasn't exactly
something I wanted to do.

As I posted a while back, my neighbor of many years passed away. Extremely
nice person. After her death, one of her granchildren moved their two pit bulls
in. Okay, they were on a chain only. Local law is that a Pit Bull should be both
chained and caged. (Pit bull killed a young girl here a year ago.)

The problem was that no one actually lived there. House was empty, with the
man coming over every few days to care for the dogs.

These dogs both got loose one night, came over my fence. My own dog, a crippled
lab, did what he had to do. Defended his property. Afraid it was a losing battle for
Jake. So I helped Jake out... a ball bat and a pistol, I got the Pits attention.

I didn't shot them yet. Just backed them up. Gave Jake a chance to get to the porch.
The two pits were pacing back and forth in the yard, looking for their chance.

Called the sheriff, Chris. I knew he was at the fire department, he was here quickly.
He assessed the situation, called the county dog catcher and was waiting on them to
arrive. Dogs made another aggressive move, and HE (the sheriff) put them down.

Dog catcher hauled them away. Game warden was called on scene. Not real sure why,
but I didn't care.

Point is that I myself did not shoot the neighbors dogs. In calling the sheriff, I was covering
myself. The pit bulls were going to die either way. Just a question of my covering myself from
irate neighbors suing me for shooting their dogs.

The dog owner didn't know for two days about his dogs. Like I said, he didn't live there. Sheriff
left a notice on his door.

I talked to the neigbor man when he found out. Told him what happened. I wasn't going to sue
him over my dog's vet bills. But I meant for him to understand I won't tolerate another untended
dog on the property.

If you find yourself in the position of having to put the neighbors animal down, make sure you cover
yourself.

.....

My lab, Jake, has free rein on our property. Our FENCED property. Jake is generally right close to
me. At least within whistle distance. Great dog, my buddy. Never bothered the chickens, doesn't
bother the cats. But I felt he was doing his job in defending his property against two invading pit
bulls. He took some wounds. But he won the war.

Coyotes are everywhere around here. There are 3 missing cat posters on our telephone pole.

I think predators are only worried about scents from larger predators (mountain lions, wolves, bears, humans
smile.png
etc) and not herd animals (goats, horses, etc). How about running a radio all night instead? Talk radio, or news, not music. And a lit scarecrow or something that looks human.

i just thought about this after reading Keesmom's post and i know that does seem to help, it's also good for the chickens during the daytime to listed to music.

our local feed store is selling predator scent/urine right now. usually it is to keep deer and other problem animals away but i think i remember seeing something like wolf, fox, coyote, and other larger predators listed there. maybe they have some large cat scent that will drive them away. might even scare the dogs off the property.

eta: ok, as gross as this may sound, i found the stuff. and it looks like you might want the wolf scent. http://www.predatorpee.com/
