Stupid Neighbors Pit Bull (update 2nd neighbors dog attacked person)

Velociraptor you've seen me comment before I think that sometimes
it is owner dependent or sometimes the animal itself just is like this.
My Cocker Spaniel Howard though midsize was very vicious and I
kept him in a dog kennel (with a top because he climbed), a leash,
or in the house. Never once did he accidentally escape or cause anyone
problems other than growling at my mom trying to feed him once.

I hate to say that I hope they fall out of favor with dog
fighters and people looking for a "tough" dog because they
will find another breed to do the same to. Such as the 1980's
there were Dobermans and German Shepard's being walked by
thugs with huge spikey collars trying to look tough with their
accessory dog.

South Carolina Law (I was worried about this earlier): It is unlawful to kill
a domestic dog or steal one. The exceptions are if it is threatening, If it
destroys property, or kills sheep.
(Why do sheep get their own long category? lol)

Around here we dont have rott or pit proublems its the ankle bitters and the labs that attack and charge.I have beens growled at,bit and charged by everything but the so called dangerous dogs.Im sorry you have to deal with stupid pet owners.Any dog no matter its breed or size attacking my kids,me or my animals will be taken care of....
Its good thing you had a pipe handie to beam the dog good.

Any dog, and I do mean ANY, can be made to be aggressive. Most aggressives are "fear" based. The dog has taken up the alpha postition in his/her pack because the "human" guardian hasn't; but the dog just doesn't know what to do and ergo acts out aggressively.

Note that everytime I've been bit it was by a small dog...I think because they are cute little furballs, they aren't taken seriously by the owner and no levels of obedience are achieved forgetting that they still think and act like a big dog and still have teeth.

It is an unfortunate reality that people treat dogs like children. That burns my britches!

talos...I think the only reason that the pit broke off with the metal pipe is because it hadn't yet escalated into full out attack/blood frenzy mode. My understanding of these fighting breeds is that pain feeds into their attack and escalates it. I'd keep that shot gun of your dads around....unfortunately. I'm sorry that you are faced with this situation and I wish you luck that a happy resolution is achieved.

Also "T" posts make great building anchors. Just pound them in the ground at apropriate spots and screw/bolt them to the building. They even come with handy holes already in them.

BSL in certainly not the answer... laws that DEMAND responsible ownership are. Pit bull or not, if a dog charged me or any of my children for no reason, it would be a dead dog, regardless of law. However, if a dog is going after another animal (as animals are prone to do) and I hit it and it turned on me, I'd think a bit diferently. There are so many factors. Ever notice how every bad dog post either says just "Dog" or "Pit Bull"

It's the same thing that happens in the media.... only the only ones you hear about there are the "Pit Bull" ones. But, that's all I will say on that.

The neighbor certainly needs to go to greater lengths to restrain her dog to her property. I would be utterly ashamed if my dog got loose like that. Was she even there to get her dog BEFORE animal control showed up? Did she even know it was at large??

Same here. My 10 yo was attatacked and seriously harmed by a Westie. It was "no bid deal" to the dog owner.

Talos, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with a pitt bull. but since I have one, and I have to protect her from my 6 lb roo, I still say it is the owner not the dog. We have had Miss Mia almost 9 years and she will o off with any one that pats her on the head. Our neighbors dogs came down the hill and attacked her and she just rolled over on her back. I had a large vet bill for a scared Pit bull dog. But I keep her close to me and take responsible care of her, as her owner that is my responsibility. If your neighbor is not going to be a good caretaker, call her homeowners insurance. Mine has Mia on it but she is excluded, so i know Ins. Co's are really strange when it comes to pitts. Marrie

You should have shot it. It will be back and I just pray that your kids are not outside. Those dogs should be ban. I would never want that liability in a pet. I don't care what people say, my children are more important that an animal. Please watch out for that dog before it is too late.

Talos,

I think you should call animal control or the sheriff (whomever is your local authority over this) again and ask them why this dog was just left with the owner.

Please also ask them why she was not fined or cited for the dog running amuck and if there is an "aggressive dog" type law. This dog tried to attack you. If you did not have the pipe, you certainly would have been bitten.

You need to tell them that the dog came after you and you did in fact beat it with a metal pipe to defend yourself.

I really see a tragic ending being set up here for the dog and for some poor unsuspecting soul. And, I hope it is not a child or someone elses little dog.

Also this could come back on the law enforcement officials because the "handwriting is on the wall" so to speak and they have done nothing to protect people from this dangerous animal.
