Thanks to everyone for their opinion and advice!

We went today...and darned if my son didn't pick out the metal one! His "rationale" was it was shiny, so the chicks would like it better. The feed store was already sold out of their chicks (not the place we are getting our chicks from - ordering from a different hatchery), so he was a little disappointed in not being able to see any babies up close...but he felt very important being able to pick out the supplies & being a part of the process.

Metal it is!

I have a metal feeder that is over 40 years old and works as well as the day my Grampaw took me to the feed store to get it ...

Nice to know there are people out there letting their children learning about poultry and your boy will be talking about the day he was taken to the feed store to purchase some supplies in many years to come ....

Well thank you Gander007! What a nice thing to say! I'm a single mom & I'm always trying to make our time together quality. He's my 1 and only. I hope that some of the interesting lessons we are learning together "stick" and he passes that knowledge along. Whether it be chickens, gardening, or just a plain love for being able to provide food for your family, fresh from your backyard. Raising kids certainly isn't the glamorous life, but the journey is made of memories.

I have used all sorts of things, from metal to plastic.. to just the base of a small waterer .. and i have found any colour will do

best thing is to make sure it's easy to clean and they don't kick bedding into it and perch on it..

I actually have a hanging 3lb feeder in with some 1+wk olds right now.. they were making a bloody mess and i was fed up! their in a pool for a brooder lol

Hi and welcome "neighbor" (we aren't too far across the river from you) - I absolutely love that you and your son are doing this together, the excitement of both of you comes through the screen loud and clear! It sounds like these are going to be some very lucky little chicks to come into a home with so much love waiting for them.

I head across the river quite a bit - I think that Walmart is much friendlier! My son is so ecstatic about the chicks...trying to name them before even meeting them! He's a good boy - I'm very blessed!
