Sumatra Thread!

Ok we will try that. There is a little one day 4H show in Nov that we would like to take the happy couple to just to see what a judge thinks of them. And it's all in one day so I don't have worry about leaving them for several days and getting too stressed. Thanks for the advice i realy was uncertain about taking him as he is still so untame.
Alexis whole club is excited to see the rooster she has talked so much about!
His feathering looks amazing! The two or three long ones look so tattered. The ones he came here with did fall out and those were the replacements, I hope they fall out and grow back by Nov! Or should I pull them a month before the show so new ones will be in?
I only have some 5-6 mo old chicks molting now, none of my adults are molting.
And I'm so excited, the sumatra hen has laid two eggs in two days!!! She quit laying past two months. But she is laying in my horses stall on the ground. The fist day she made a little hay nest and luckily my mare is not a pig so she left it alone. Then yesterday she laid on the bare mat, she tried nesting and all she did was scrape away all the shavings and the egg was cracked from hitting the bare floor. So today the Sumatras are staying in the coop until I find an egg in the nesting box.

If the feathers are broken and tattered you can pull.... I don't like doing it if I don't need to, he's been a cold weather bird and since you aren't cold there and have a big weather change maybe its just going to take the days getting shorter to throw him into molt. I say a minimum of 6 weeks for feathers to get back and on longer feather birds add a couple of weeks. I will just usually pull one or two, I would just wait if he needed a lot pulled. Poor guy, he was just low on the totem pole here in the bachelor pen and got his feathers beat up, bet he's loving being the only guy with all those girls. Sounds like maybe she quit laying to go through her molt and now may be ready to set some eggs :). Good Luck at the show and hopefully he will be ready then or at least pretty close

Make up your mind and keep the story straight.

After hearing about what everybody had said I guess it is ok to pull out the tail feathers. No one seems to be having the same problems with it like I do if I pull them out. I am still learning to please give me a break. :)

Hey Cubakid, hope all's going well for you.

Very, very busy. Not too much time spent anywhere except my room doing homework. Plus I'm taking a class at the local junior college. Unfortunately in all my lack of time, I forgot the pox vaccination for this year. Guess what started showing up two weeks ago. I went through as soon as I saw a bird with it and vaccinated, but I think it's too late. Many birds showing signs, and many Australorps have it, which may ruin the points on their combs. My luck. Show season is starting off week and small scale compared to usual.

Sorry about the bad luck. The pox ran through NC last year from what I heard (I didn't get it), I thought it would repeat this year since all of spring and most of the summer was rainy here. But I haven't heard of it popping up in NC so far. I hope your birds don't get it too bad and recover quickly
