Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

Just checking in before I go to bed. I guess everyone is super busy. Quiet on here today. Weather feels great tonight, but the heat is coming. I think they predict 104 degrees by Friday. All my friends and family in Fla are safe and only got some much needed rain. Hope everyone is well. Nite Nite~

I agree, it is quiet on here. I'm about ready to call it a day. It's been a busy one as we decided to cover the raised beds with shade cloth. Our desert heat is bad on vegetable plants, especially tomatoes, beans and cucumbers. I noticed two pumpkins today. We put in the 4x4 posts today and tomorrow will add the 2x4 stringers across the top before covering everything with shade cloth. The final dimensions are 14x19.

I've done two blocks, both 12" and I'll take pictures soon and post them. Night all!

Rain, wind, fire. I hope you are all well and safe.

I might be coming down with a bug. If I do and I'm not very sick, I should be able to work on 12" squares. I'm using a simple pattern and not a lot of colors, so hope to make some serious progress.

Smitty- I sympathize with sleep problem. I hope you can get some sleep soon. I love the patterns you use and, though I'm not on the receiving end and can't speak for anyone but myself, I think they'd be lovely for the swap. You don't need to come up with something new. I have a lot of difficulty with instructions. I can't even figure out a popcorn stitch. Drop a loop and pick up a loop? Huh?

Sunny-Would you like a crocheted dish cloth as a moving/birthday gift? A friend told me dish cloths can be pretty and made up a pattern which is quite nice. Then, after the moving dust settles, and the wind dust has been cleaned away, you can enjoy washing dishes in your new home at your new age.

Good Morning Swappers~

I've been busy dividing my time between the house & our new business we are trying to get up and running. We had our second hearing with the City on Mon night w/ the Majors & Aldermen and they all say Yes. YAY!!!! Now we have our next hearing/meeting on July 2nd. In the mean time DH tore out what use to be dressing rooms to make more room and started stubbing out handicapped bathroom, so there is lots of dust for me to clean. I have tumble weeds of dog hair at home from all the animals and dust at the shop.

Betty~ Glad you got your garden covered to protect your yummy veggies. My potted herbs are thriving. I'll cook with them all summer long. I'd like to maybe make some herb infused oils & vinegars for gifts, but not sure I potted up enough. I've been saying that for years and seem to never make the time to do it, so maybe this year. I can't wait to see your squares.

Alethea~ Thank you!!! You are always so kind. I've always liked the sunflower pattern. I actually made myself learn it for one of the swaps on here with some help of a kind lady from JoAnn's Fabric store. I didn't understand the pattern, but once she showed it to me it made sense. Usually the swaps are a good motivator for me to make myself learn new things. I think my problem is patience.

Let me know if you need help with the popcorn stitch, b/c that is actually one of the stitches in the sunflower pattern. I couldn't get it until I had some hands on training, so totally understand. Directions drive me bonkers sometimes.

I think I'm slowly getting back on schedule.

DH & I miss our DD terribly. DH keeps saying it's a dose of what it will be like when she starts college in Aug, but I told him right now it is actually worse, b/c she has no phone service at camp at all, but she will have service at college. She works an intense schedule with only one day off from work. We look forward to the quick calls from her where she can finally get service weekly.

I haven't had time to work on any more swap squares, but will post a pic of my too big square for you soon.

I hope everyone stays safe.
Have a great day~

Good luck with the garden structures. Looking forward to seeing those pics!

Wow I think you've been reading my mind! I keep saying I need to get some cotton yarn and crochet up some dish cloths! I'm down to only a few and we always run out before laundry day! Thank you!!!

Thanks Kim. We are all doing well here now that everything is moved over.
I hope your next meeting goes well. Yes not being able to get ahold of your loved ones makes it super hard! It will be different once you know you can get her on the phone. I hope you get some rest soon!!!

Well I knew the heat would catch us eventually. It's late, but it is here and to stay all week long. News says it was 108 degrees, but several people reported that they were reading 110 degrees.

Here's a pic of the new pattern I tried. It needs tweaking & finessing.

Sunny~ YAY!!!

So glad you are all moved! I'll get to talk to DD on Sat on her day off from work. She'll be finished working at camp on July 7th, so not too much longer until she will be home and I have a little time with her before she starts college in Aug.

Alethea~ Forgot to add that I hope you feel better!

I made another sunflower pattern square tonight in diff color combo, so I now have 4 complete squares for the swap. Yippeee!!!

OK, I have a confession to make. I have been lurking on your thread since it started, and figured it's time to introduce myself. I haven't wanted to join because of time constraints and lack of experience. I taught myself to crochet 2 years ago so I could make little stuffies (amigurumi), but haven't learned much more than single crochet and I am slooooww, especially at reading patterns with new stitches.

Everyone's work looks beautiful and I have enjoyed reading your posts. (Hope you don't mind!) I hope you are planning another swap for the fall, and I'll try to join in then. I'll practice making squares in the mean time. Question: Is it necessary to block the squares? I'll have to look up how to do that.

Here's a pic of some of my little critters. They were all from patterns. I thought they were irresistible and inspired me to learn.
Nice to meet you!

Hi Wishing4wings~

So nice to meet you. I'm Kim. Those are adorable crocheted animals. You do great work! You should join the swap. The deadline to sign up for this swap isn't until July 31st and then you have 2 months to complete all the swap squares after that. If not, I'm sure there will be another swap in the future. There are some wonderful tutorials on the web & you tube that teach how to do granny squares. Another thread you may want to look at is The Crochet Chat in this section. It's just a place for the crocheters can exchange ideas, get help or share what projects we are working on. I don't think it's necessary to block squares, but it can help with shape and size. I've not ever blocked any of my squares for the swap in the past.

Wishing4Wings ~ Hi!!!

Those critters are CUTE!! If you can teach yourself how to do that then a granny square should be a breeze :) This is my first swap and I'm really enjoying it. It's giving me something to do when the weather is too hot to go outside or when work is slow. I have a habit of starting a project and then losing steam, but since I know they need to be finished by a certain date I'm just zipping right along. I'm only blocking the squares that are just shy of being 6 inches (I'm one of those people who like things to line up even, lol).

Betty ~ I'm looking forward to seeing your 12 inch blocks!

Alethea ~ I hope you're feeling better!!

Kim ~ Good luck with your next meeting. What kind of shop do you all have? We've started with the triple digit heat here, too.

Sunny ~ I hope you've been getting some rest between moves!

Kate ~ I hope that you all have stayed safe! The NM fires have quieted down now, right? I know that recovery will be a long and slow process...

Everyone stay cool and safe!
