Summer 2012 Granny "Square" Swap (sign ups closed)

Sunny, I love that block. The colors look great. The 12" blocks did take longer to do, I agree.

The deal on the house my daughter and her husband were buying fell through so now it's back to square one. The inspector found that the roof was unsafe and needed replacing so the seller backed out. That's Fanny Mae for you. They're looking today for another. The good news is they won't have such a long escrow.

My 18 yr. old grandson Josh fell off his bike at ECU a few days ago and it's turned out he has a concussion. They're doing a CT scan today. The bleeding from his eye has stopped but his face and lips are still swollen. My daughter went up to Greenville today to be with him. I know he's worried he won't be able to continue his ROTC but we're praying that he'll have a full recovery.

So happy to hear so many of you are having fun with the swap. I've enjoyed it. The different sizes and different patterns give so much versatility.

My puppy is growing. Both her ears are up and she runs with the "pack", my daughters five big dogs. She's learning so fast and gets along with them. She'll miss them when they leave.

Sunny~ You may have been a beginner swapper, but there is no way you were a beginner crocheter. The crochet projects you've posted over the years on the crochet chat thread and the swap threads are exquisite! You do very nice work!

I never crocheted a granny square before participating in a swap either. I have really grown to like them. There is so many things you can make with them. Even though I learned to crochet when I was young it's not been but the past 3 or 4 years that I've time to really have time to crochet. I feel like I'm learning a little more each year. Still trying to learn how to decipher patterns, but getting better at it.

Yes I have to agree that I love the swaps b/c it also challenges me to learn new things and they are just sooooo much fun!!!

Betty~ I'm so sorry that the deal fell through on your daughter's house, but good thing they found out about the roof before buying it I guess. Good luck with the new search. I hope your grandson has a speedy recovery and that it doesn't interfere w/ his ROTC. I think it is sooooooo adorable that your new puppy has taken to your daughter's dogs. I can just picture all 5 of them running around playing together. That is very sweet!

I picked my DD up from college this afternoon. She wasn't really home sick, but needed to get some items from home. Oh I've missed her so much, but feel really good about her college. It's soooooo good to have her home. She's been elected to be on the Freshman Council and is meeting so many new friends from all around the world. The college announced that this is the most diverse freshman enrollment in their history.

Thanks Betty. Sure hope your DD and SIL find the perfect home soon. I agree that it's better to find out about these problems ahead of time. The deal that's right for them will come along soon enough. So great that they have a safe place to stay with you until that happens! My Dad has been living with us for a month now and I have to say I am loving having more family around. Well I wouldn't say that about some family members but having my Dad around has been great.

Awwww thanks Kim! No I wasn't a beginning crocheter but I was still pretty new at trying different stitches. New patterns were much more challenging back then. Some still are but it is getting a lot easier than it was back then.

The college sounds like a great environment! So cool to hear that they have such a diverse student body! That alone says a lot about the quality of the education offered there.

Do whatever you feel comfortable with. I love the bigger squares cause I have more freedom to play with a pattern and use larger flowers etc. I followed the tutorial that you linked for the rectangle and it was not the right size when finished so I added to it. If you chain 25 stitches to start, the finished rectangle comes out just right. Just in case you wanted to try again. She states to be sure and not miss the first chain once you've finished the beginning corners and she is right! I missed it the first try and of course had to tear it out cause I ran out of chains too soon, haha.

Sunny-I was surprized to know Kim's swap was your first. You sounded so experienced. That was when I tuned in, too, but was too late to join.

Leolanna-My return to Berkeley has been postponed a day. I'll try to inventory my squares when I get back on the 29th. I didn't think I'd be as anxious to return as I am, but the smoke here is starting to affect the ol'body.

Betty-I'm offering merit to your grandson.

Good morning~

I tried to start another 12" square last night, but only got a few rounds done on it b/c DD & I were watching the ole classic movie ALIEN. OOoooooo that old movie is still scary in a funny kind of way, so I couldn't concentrate on stitches.

I have 6 squares finished!

I am having trouble w/ the rectangle as well. The pattern I'm doing for my 12" makes about a 7 or 8" square, so I added more double crochet rounds until it measured to be 12". I decided to use a bigger hook as well. I usually use a H hook for for 6", but I bumped up to use an I and a J one for the 12".

I was scared to try the 12", but now that I found I pattern I can do I really like them. Since they are so big we will be closer to having enough squares to make an afghan.

Alethea~ I am so sorry about the smoke from the fires effecting the Mt Shasta area. I hope they resolve the problems soon. So much drought is all over the place. Have safe travels back to Berkley.

Ok I've got dogs to feed, a dirty house to straighten and want to make my veggie head DD some meals that she can take back to college and stick in the freezer to pull out if she doesn't have time to go to the dining hall. Hopefully I can sit and crochet swap stuff again tonight.
