Sunflower Chickens

Oh my gosh Katy! What an awesome barnyard and egg basket!! Do you sale your eggs or chicks? I am asking for two reasons. First, my kids are into 4H and we are often asked where people can get certain breeds. Second, I try to buy "local" and push very hard for people to buy "local", so I would rather support my fellow Kansans in my chicken habit!

I sell hatching eggs sometimes. Haven't yet this year.

Dark chocolate eggs....? You're wanting a wellsummer then...?

Katy has some wheaten marans that I was looking to get some hatching eggs from, if my hen will ever go broody. I did see another Kansas member had really dark eggs and had wellsummers I don't know just figured since I love the marans breed I would go with those. Now I don't care just want those dark chocolate looking eggs.

I'm sold out of all of my Marans chicks for now, but will be setting some eggs for a hatch today. I can set some EEs, too, if you like. I won't be heading in your direction any time soon, but maybe someone else will be? Or maybe someone from your area is headed here in about a month?

I can't help you who to keep...that's too hard!

I actually have the wellsummer chickens and am happy to share eggs when you need them. Heck I give them to people who dont have food money why not to my friends. I have some under two broodies now; one a silky due any day, the other a white rock who just decided to pick a spot. The old hen behind the curtan. After Tonya gets her pick I will have some chicks I hope to give away too. I am figureing that if I give enough eggs away someone is going to find another flock of wellsummers not related and snag me some eggs to improve my own genetics. Just a small hope. I do sell them on craigs list to people I dont know. I sold a few dozen so far this spring.

ChooksChick I would love some more EE's Are you setting any silkie eggs this year? Just let me know either I can see if someone is coming to the Salina area or if I have to make a trip up your ways.

My DH is going to shot me soon. He still won't understand chicken math.

I think I will do the marans and the EE's this year. Then hopefully next year will find us on a farm and I can have all the breeds I want.

Mike - where did you get your wellies? I have a few left, but they are not in their own flock. If it seems the genetics are different, I will try to separate them into their own flock and collect some eggs. One of the hens has been free ranging with a mixed roo and she is laying nice dark eggs. When I found her nest I was surprised how dark they are. One of my hens has gone broody, so may put some of the wellie eggs under her. Anyway, the hens are getting older and don't lay a lot now, but they have had a lot of the eggs with heavy speckles on them. Not sure If I still have a pic of some of them after I fried my old computer.

My birds came from Allan at Valley Feed and grain. He collects eggs from the Mennonites from Southern Kansas and Missouri. :)So far my birds have laid really nice eggs with little or no fadeing. At least until I locked them up to protect them from Mr. Fox. I would be happy to hatch and swap or trade eggs so I can hatch under a hen. Just let me know.

Mike - that is far enough away from the person I got mine from that they might be from different lines. That person does go to swaps, etc so guess its a toss up. I don't want any eggs or chicks in exchange because I need to reduce the birds I have. I will see if I can get the wellies to themselves and take it from there. Any resulting eggs you may have.
