Super cold weather!

Not sure what the temp in the run is, but when I changed out the water an hour ago the water I put out at 8 am was not frozen yet. I checked their food and they did eat, but I mixed a little corn in with their regular feed then tossed them a few meal worms. Th high here today is predicted to be 4 F. No real warm up until tomorrow. How about them Patriots!
Gotta love them. Chickens and Patriots What more could a person want. LOL

Yay! the temps are edging back into the not so insane range, it's about 16 F here and rising. We did not get all that much snow 6 -10 inches. The "snow pack" on the roof of the run and the coop is only about 3 - 4 inches, but the interior temp remained no lower than 10F and that after -3 or -4 Sunday into Monday and only up to 3F all day Monday. The birds seem fine. I did get a lot of exercise running warm water to them numerous times yesterday. Hope your wee ones are all good too!

Most hated team, I don't care much about football, not much at all. My team was buffalo bills (my neck of the woods) way back in the 90's when they went to the Superbowl three times in a row and lost...
I hope the Patriots win just to p i zz off everybody :p
Interesting tid bit. A pastor in Showhegan Maine predicted the score. 37-31 and wrote on the outside billboard of the church. God doesn't have a favorite team but I do. LOL

GO PATS. Seems they didn't cheat last Sunday but the refs have a gift from some eye doctors for free eye exams. I think it was in VA. May the best team win. My sons love the PATS. They do play nail biters. I think that's part of their strategy. :woot

10F today light snow supposed to be 29F today. Tomorrow 48-50F with 1-3 inches of rain. January thaw. Short lived in the deep freeze on Saturday. Maine ya gotta love it to get out.

Mine survived fine last winter with 14 straight days in the negative numbers. However I winterize my run by wrapping it in 7 mil plastic to keep the wind out. With this mine dont hang out in the actual coop at all during the day even in the negatives. I did have a few with very large combs suffer a little frostbite but they healed right up in the spring.

That silver laced Wyandotte is so white on her chest! Very cool.

At -22 F last winter my girls were out in the run, eating and drinking and pecking and scratching like it was a normal day. For them, it was. Wind chill factor only counts if the birds are out in the wind. If they are in a protected run or in the coop there is no wind chill to factor in.

When it's cold the sparrows and wrens are out flying around from place to place. They are not huddled up in a ball trying to stay warm. Like the chickens they also wear a down coat year round.

Strange that no one worries about air conditioning for the birds on 80 degree days in the summer. It must be more uncomfortable for the birds to be wearing those down coats in the summer than it is to be wearing those down coats in the winter.
