Mites have been an on-going battle here. But i have one little D'Anver hen with them and i can not get rid of them. i dropped Ivermectin on the back of her neck and dusted her with Poultry Dust. She still had them. i retreated with the Ivermectin two days later and redusted. She still has them. i sprayed her with Poultry Protector. Still there. i dusted her again with the Poultry Dust. i just checked her again and i see the mites crawling around amidst the poultry dust on her bottom.

What is going on? Is there some sort of super mite out there that refuses to die? i treated the other hens and their mites are gone. Why would she still have them after all this? i'm afraid all this ivermectin and poultry dust is going to do her in, but the mites will still be going strong.

This is a stupid question but have you changed all the bedding and dusted the coops and nest boxes? & have you been dusting the vent area?

Not a stupid question at all. Yes, i did totally clean out the coop and put down Poultry Dust and fresh pine shavings. Funny thing, the other hens in that same pen are not infested, just her.

Bath time maybe???? Where a rain coat!

Yeh, i think you're right. i think i've heard of people using dog flea shampoo on chickens. i can pick some up tomorrow. Luckily, Abigail is a sweetheart. i've had to soak her in the sink a number of times for stuck eggs and she took it pretty well.

I've read of Frontline working when other things didn't -- but I would research this before doing it.

I had a lot of luck putting frontline on my hens to get rid of the mites, The only thing I cant find is the withdraw time for the eggs. I use (so do many other people I know) frontline plus, draw it up in a syringe, take off the needle and place ONE drop ON THE BACK OF THE NECK for bantams, and TWO to THREE DROPS ON THE BACK OF THE NECK for standards. The people I know that use it only breed show chickens and do not eat the eggs so they do not worry about the withdraw time. It really works great to get rid of the mites.

The problem with mites if you have a bad infestation is trying to break the life cycle. The products may kill the adults but not the eggs, so you are consistently having new mites hatching. I HIGHLY recommend trying frontline, maybe just pitch the eggs for a few weeks? YOU MUST REPEAT in 3weeks to kill all the new hatch-lings. I Highly Highly recommend this. It was the only thing that I found when I had a bad infestation. I changed all the bedding, tried powders, and there was nothing that worked except frontline.

Good LUCK~

O I Forgot....FRONTLINE Plus does NOT work through the blood stream. It works through the oil and the glands of the skin. ONLY PLACE IT ON THE BACK OF THE NECK AND ONLY A DROP FOR BANTAMS AND TWO DROPS FOR STANDARDS. It will work its way over the rest of the body. If you place it under the wings and by their vent you could overdose them or they could ingest too much. They could ingest some when it spreads over all their skin but its not enough to worry about.

Because it does not go throug the bloodstream one would think it would be ok to eat the eggs, but I honestly dont know if is safe or not. I have never used it on laying hens, just on pullets. I have never had a prob. with standards and mites.
