Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

It never rains but it pours!! My poor boys have developed niacin deficiency -- suddenly this week. Pingywingy, my special needs pekin, is the worst. He starte to limp yesterday and today can hardly walk -- he is using his wings when he has to walk. Two of my three muscovy started limping today. They all have good feet, no hot or swollen joints. I bought a new sack of duck pellets last Tuesday and they started it on Wednesday. I believe that for some reason it doesn't have the normal amount of niacin in it. So, I am really worried about my boys, particularly Pingywingy. He started human Vit B complex sublingual liquid today and the others will get it from tomorrow morning until my Durvet arrives on Thursday from Amazon. I already ordered Rooster Booster Poultry Cell -- it arrived today -- as I had thought my third muscovy, as yet not limping, was "under the weather". So I made up a gallon of drinking water with an ounce of Rooster Booster Poultry Cell. They all have that in their water tubs tonight and they all got another dose on their meal worms.

On top of worrying about my boys, I got a call from my friend the wildlife rehabber, as someone dumped about 40 young quail in Jacksonville. A bunch died from the heat and dehydration before they were found, and a few ran away before they could be caught. But 20 were rescued, rehydrated and eye infections treated, Now I need to find forever adoptive homes for them. Anyone in NE Florida/SE Georgia fancy raising some cute quail? They aren't afraid and will jump up into your hand if you hand feed them. Contact me if your do!

Sorry things all went wrong all at once
Adding nutritional yeast on the feed 1tbs to 1cup feed on top of the over stuff your doing will help
I have bigger ducks and keep mine on it
I don’t do as much as when they are small but in summer it’s a few times a week 4 -5 and winter it’s daily abc a bit more
I wish the feed would have more in it as it won’t hurt the smaller breeds that don’t need it but would benefit the larger ones

Hopefully you find homes for the quail. So sad when birds are just dumped like that

Such cute little birds. I pray that your Muscovy Ducks get better soon and that you are able to rehome these little darlings.

I have been very fortunate as I have two big Rouen Hens and my huge Mule Duck along with my two Muscovy Hens, one which is bigger than the other. So far they have only gotten Puriana Flock Raiser and Laying Feed and never had any problems with any of them. The Rouen Hens are now 6 and I have had them for the past 3 years when they were rescued from my Boss at the time whose wife got tired of them. Mine won't touch peas for some crazy reason. I have tried different times but they just turn their noses up at them. I pray that yours get better soon.

As my flock are all drakes and free range forage every day, purina duck pellets have always been adequate for them until now. My son has a laying flock of pekins and feeds them organic layer feed which he supplements with Brewers yeast (that they love, year round. His females get pale bills and one lays fragile eggs towards the end of the year, and so I added nutridrench to their water, and they always have crushed oyster shell on the side. My son insists his ducks don't like the water with nutridrench in it, and so I am going to swap the Nutridrench with Rooster Booster Poultry Cell, although I don't know why he thinks they don't like Nutridrench

I presently have 5 drakes in drake jail. I have been contemplating rehoming a couple of my Call Drakes. One of them escaped out of jail last night sometime and this morning there it was, pacing back and forth in the large pen trying to get back with it's Mafia brothers. It had 11 hens it could have been chasing but instead I watched it for quite sometime, just pacing back and forth wanting to be with them. They are perfectly happy to be in jail so they are going nowhere. They are sweet little fellas, I just put them in jail because they were trying to mate my Mallard hen, three on one. As long as they are happy to be isolated from the girls I am keeping them. When I go in their large pen to feed them they never try to escape or leaven when the door is open. I had injured my foot and thought they had enough food to last overnight but saw this morning it had ran out. I am sure that is the only reason the one escaped. He was hungry thinking he could get back in. I just wanted to share, some people think its cruel to keep them separated but mine don't seem to mind a bit so as long as they are happy so am I. I even had the daughter to the one that escaped in the pen where he could have gotten to her but he only wanted back with his gang.

Update on my acute niacin deficient ducks. The two muscovy are still limping but all three muscovy went foraging this morning (good sign). They each chomped down on the Vit B Complex soaked mealworms last night and this morning and are drinking Rooster Booster Poultry Cell in their water.

Pingywingy, the special needs pekin, is not eating, not even mealworms. I again gave him his Vit B Complex by pipette down the side of his tongue this morning. He is drinking his Poultry Cell water, quite regularly and so I am going to make him up some oral rehydration salts (which has glucose in it) and add his Poultry Cell to that.

I had to pick him up from the back of his dog crate as he made no effort to get up. He had a swim in the kiddie pool and did preen himself when I lifted him out of the water. But, he is just lying behind his food and water bowls now.

I put the three muscovies' food on the outside of Pingy's run, by Pingy's food, so that they come there and eat by him. I hope that will encourage him to eat. Now it's raining and cold for this time of year, so I have rigged up a tent over the temporary run, using a tarp.

Pingy is not improving at the moment. 😢

The brewer's yeast arrives from Amazon today
