Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

Such beautiful babies. I am sending my young Mallard Drakes down the road this week along with the father to them. It will be easier on all of my hens if I keep the smaller drakes instead. They do a lot less harm even though one is still able to mate them as that is how I got my Swedish drake duckling 10 weeks ago.
It’s not always easy to send some off but you are doing the right thing keeping your girls safe :)

This wee child is Truffle, she’s about two and a half weeks old. 2AE84650-5BEB-4495-8BB4-E96FC3C902F4.jpeg
Truffle is an only child because her mom isn’t a broody duck and the broody duck that was incubating her is a certified psychopath.…

Truffle came into this world after a rocky start, she was the last egg that survived the lunatic and had an unsettling amount of extra fluid in her egg prior to pipping, it looked like a one duck pool party sloshing around in there.

On top of that she never internally pipped, instead Truffle busted a hole through the side of her egg three days before beginning her hatch.
I had taken her egg because her surrogate nutjob of a step mom was a threat to her life, and so Truffle spent her days brooding on top of a heat pad in a box which was far from ideal “no incubator,” but the extreme arid environment seemed to be just what she needed as the extra liquid dried up and she zipped and hatched without issue and has been a bundle of active fluff since.

My search for ducklings of her general age range in my area so far has been fruitless so she’s been a spoiled child spending every day, all day at my side, though she hasn’t been as demanding as other ducklings I’ve had so it‘s been more pleasant than insanity inducing.

Lately she’s been getting gradually acquainted with the other ducks, Bee “the lunatic” and her dad Sunbeam have mostly been hostile but her mom Moonbeam has been very friendly and curious towards her, thankfully Truffle and Moon seem to be taking to each other fairly well.

During the day when not out and about she has a box she eats in, and her red blanket covered beanbag she sits with me on. She likes watching tv.

Overall Truffle is a precious little sweet pea but she does have one non negotiable demand. If she doesn’t have her grey velour bankie wrapped around her at night she will scream until your ears bleed. No other towel, blanket, sweater, or any substitute will do and if I try her shrieks echo half way across the continent. She must have her grey snuggle cave or the world must suffer her sonic terrorism.

Amazing story :)
Nice to meet you truffles
Looks like you have your human mom wrapped about your toes 😂

Last baby has hatched
Never had one this colour before
It’s blonde but not a brighter yellow
I do have a buff Swedish so wondering if she is mom
Baby was a full assist as it bruised the egg 3 days ago I made the safety hole and left it be till this morning
I never open the egg more as I don’t want to be wetting membrane
Assisting over time I learned less is better :)
She seems to be doing good
Moving around a little and even had a poo while I was holding her
She is day 31
Her siblings hatched day 28 and 29’
I didn’t get these eggs till day 17 and Babies looked behind for the date as well as air cells were tiny so it’s been a challenge with them
They are my ducks eggs but a lady took them for her broody goose who scattered them day 16 and she brought them to me the next day
Eggs were cold and no movement so I really didn’t have much hope
But all 3 hatched :)
