Support Group for Abused Duck Keepers

Well 2025 not so boring already
One gander has been mating my 4 younger girls
They have been getting a good amount of bald spots
One had a little scab from him biting skin now that feathers are gone
Well today I found her with a bigger wound from him mating her she must have turned her head as that would hurt and he grabbed her ear
Now she is bald on her ear too
Caused the skin to break on her head and bleed
Uggh not the start I was looking for
He isn’t mean just a little over excited to have new young ladies
I have moved her into a pen with a sister to give her time to heal
Poor girl!

Drakes can be brutal on hens. I know it is the nature of the beast but that is why I rehomed all of my big ones and now have just my 3 little Call drakes. They can have 10 Hens in a pen with one drake and if he decides just one is his favorite he will over mate that one and ignore all the rest. I am glad she has a chance to heal and hopefully he will not hurt any of the others. I make mine be at least 6 months old before they are even exposed to a drake and I am sure yours are all probably that old. Good luck with him.

These are geese
Girls are 8 months old
The problem is my gander is very big boy and water would be much better for them to mate in
He slips and grabs on and if they turn they’re head he gets the side of their face
I have watched him and he isn’t a mean boy just struggling with balance in ground mating
I have moved all 4 of my younger group so they can all heal
I have 3 ganders and 8 females. That’s plenty of girls for geese ratio and only he is in mate
Gary my original boy is chill and attached to only stella
They are not active right now but last year at this time when she was same age as these girls they were active in mate. I think the younger girls give off signals and hormones
The big ganders original 2 ladies he came with are not active with him right now but are also older

Oh, sorry, I thought they were ducks. I can surely see how a big goose could do some damage not meaning to. I had a huge Muscovy drake and had to rehome him because even in drake jail he tried to mate my poor little Mallard drake. Those boys!!! lol

Silly girls give the signal then regret it once it starts 😂

We need to get our girls in on a zoom call or something. My Delphi can give them some pointers. Leo was too rough with the girls and baldness and bloody scabs were the norm every breeding season until he tried it with Delphi and pulled some of her feathers out. She turned around and grabbed him as hard as she could, he took off running, dragging her along all around the yard until she managed to yank a clump of feathers out of him. He hasn’t done that since.

Good for Her!!!!

I came across these when looking for duck shoes or supports to help this little duck with the niacin issue
I’m going to order her a pair but thought I would share as I have never found anything like it before and looks like it would help with leg issues
They customize to your bird
