Surviving Another Depression.......What Would We Need?

I have news for you all. If this turns into an actual depression and then into
anarchy there will be very little you can do. The population density in most
of the country is way to high to live off the land. The cities would become
battle grounds and the exodus would spread armed gangs into the country.

We all should have at least a 6 months supply of food, even if it's lots of rice
and canned beans. Medical supply and vitamins to supplement our diets
would be important too. Fuel, such as firewood, propane, and diesel should
be kept on hand too, as well as firearms.

Farm animals, especially backyard flocks, would become prime targets for
thieves. Protecting these flocks would be close to impossible, especially if
free ranging.

But this is all just fiction anyways. This downturn in the economy shall pass.
These depression posts are nothing more than depressing. Have faith people.

It's a good thing whether we need it or not. There could be other reasons to be prepared like a terrorist attack on a power grid or a variety of reasons that a person should know how to be self reliant if necessary.

If nothing happens at least I can lay my head on my pillow at night knowing that somehow I could survive a catastrophe if I needed to.

I refuse to go into panic mode. My parents and grandparents told story after story of the great depression. Rationing....salt, chocolate,gas,sugar...the biggest items. This is why DH and I have started a few years ago, to become self suffecient. I do think tho...the one thing we might have a shortage of here...is canning lids. Time to get out there and buy all I can afford to. They never go bad....will be a great asset in the days to come. Might even be a great bartering tool. I agree on the seeds for gardening..and more people need to learn to live from thier own hands. The only thing that worries me....my yuppie children. They would never survive a depression. Cash on hand...grandpa always had a few jars with money in it. When the banks fail....there goes your money. Am I worried?? Sure...but not about surviving out here..im worried about protecting what little we have.

How about a new president? lol.

We are set up with firewood an alot of food in the freezer in case it where to ever happen.

Panic, no...but making sure we have a full pantry and freezer...definitely. I do want to be somewhat prepared...simply because it makes me feel better to be:>)

Hear hear.

If people want to work out their nervous energy on something, go learn a new SKILL today. Learn to sew. Learn to cook from scratch with basic pantry ingredients (that is, nothing yer great gramma wouldn't have had). Learn to solder, to do basic carpentry, basic electrical wiring, small engine or auto repair (that is what *I* oughta be learning). Go out in the yard and turn some ground over and dump a buncha organic material on it so you can make a veg patch there next spring.

All of which will be useful no matter WHAT happens.

Pat

Go out in the yard and turn some ground over

I would but I got replaced by a single bottom plow.

Now I want a t-shirt to wear on my non-skinny ol' self when I'm out digging the garden, that says "double-bottom walking plow".

(Well, walking and leaning on shovel and sitting on ground and wandering off to watch chickens...)

lol

Pat, who thinks it would be awfully cool to have a draft pony to pull a small plow and stoneboat and things like that, but doubtless never will, and would settle for a tractor, but doubtless never will have that either

My husband has worked in the banking industry for several years... This could rival the great depression of 29..
We have just begun to see the affects of it.. We need an FDR president to turn this country around.
Big businesses failing have a trickle down affect on smaller ones. Plentiful jobs will then go too.
Best advice... Have cash on hand!
