Surviving Minnesota!

Morning . Late start today . About 2 inches of rain . Up to second knuckle on my finger in a bucket . Did not do much yesterday . Cut up a dead fall for the campfire . Have not done much campfire this trip . I thought I would go fishing last evening but it rained . Tried to grill and the rain made me move the grill out of the rain . I will probably just putter around in the big shed today . I really can not do nothing . Well maybe on dark dreary days . Sampled the wild raspberries . Too bad they are not more productive .

Lots of rain as Erli and Jerry said. Really needed as some folks were talking about lowering docks.
Last night we detailed the runabout. A family affair. She looks good.

I will need to mow today sometime...

I have started my Grandpa daycare day.

I am trying to learn Calvinesse. I do not understand it very well, luckily his 4 year old sister speaks it well.

We had an interesting night/morning.

At around 7 Ethel was in her pen with her baby Guineas. I have been letting her out every day to free range and locking her up at night. I purposely, or is it because I am lazy, do not mow or cut any weeds around the breeding pens, coops and brooder shed this time of year. That way the babies have places to hide from the Evil Eagles.

I went out to shut the doors and lock Ethel's pen at around 10:00pm. Ethel was gone! I ran back to the house to grab some flashlights to look for her. The Lightning was everywhere. The rain was just starting to pour. Judy came out and helped look. We found her in the tall weeds. I would have left her if not for the thunderstorm warnings. Judy grabbed a box and I started grabbing Keets from under Ethel. Lucky for us Ethel is take and does not mind us monkeying with her or her babies as long as they do not cry. I put 6 in the box Judy held the box. The last one decided to be a PITA and took off through the grass and weeds.

Judy set the box down to help me, and, of course, another PITA jumped out. She went after the one I was after, I went after the escapee. She caught hers, I did not catch mine. We put Ethel and the 6 in her pen. Then searched for the escapee.

No luck. I got the bright idea to bring Ethel out to call for the escapee. I went and got Ethel, instead of calling she started giving the "HIDE, STAY PUT" call. Ethel was worried about her other babies and when I set her down she ran back into the shed to her pan. By this time we are getting pouring rain and mosquitoes at the same time! How is that possible?

We searched another 10 minutes or so and I told Judy, " Let's call it off".

Judy did not want to she felt it was her fault the meet escaped. It was, but me being "Mr Wonderful" did not confirm it to her and lied to her saying "no, it's not".

I told her to stop looking and head in. I headed in and she kept looking. Finally I convinced her we saved 6 we did ok.

We had turkey poults in the living room that decided to finally leave the heating pad and eat, drink and squawk. They demanded a light in their cage. I got them settled down after about an hour. Except for JJJ or "squeaky" as Judy calls it. Who wanted to watch TV and be held. Judy gave in and held it. We got to bed around midnight.

I went outside at 6 to check on Ethel and see if I could find the PITA meet. I found him under the weeds, he seemed fine after his night out alone. Again he ran from me it took me a good 10 minutes to catch him. When I did he started screaming bloody murder!

Ethel went nuts, I opened her door to slide him in and he screamed more and ran the other way. I slid Ethel's door the rest the way open and went after the PITA. I finally got him, EThel and his siblings.

I let everyone out, apologizing to Ed for offending him and trying to catch him last night. (Another story, long story short, he got mad and ran away for 2 hours. I thought his band was too tight.)

Then I went in to head to Shakopee. I planned to leave at 6:45am. The phone rang at 6:40. It was the post office. My chicks were in! I had no idea I was getting chicks! I have tried to find out from Cackle if they even got my order. I never received and Email, call or anything.

I had to run out and find a place for them, I begged my Mom to run to the post office and get them. Showed her where to put them and headed to Shakopee, running late, of course.

Traffic was terrible. I was about 10 minutes before I was suppose to be there and needed coffee. My son has given up coffee. I got off on the exit before his to get a coffee at Arby's. Only to find out that Arby's does not open in the morning. Do any of them?

I had to go to Caribou coffee. No drive up so I ran in knowing I was pushing the time. I got a dark coffee and left. When I got to the cut across to my son's. The road was closed! I was forced to drive 2 miles out of my way to get back to his place.

I was about 2 minutes late. Which is ok because they had about 15 minutes before they left. I am carrying in my coffee and my son says " I made you a pot".

I showed him my cup and he says" You got off to get that? How did you get through the road?'..

Then they laughed at me because there was a Mc Donald's a block out of my way on the normal route. How am I suppose to know?

Anyways, that the day so far. Mom did call and said I got around 30 chicks. I have no idea what I have or how they are doing, I am stuck here today.

I am thinking I should win the Mega Millions tonight to make up for the bad stuff I have had happen in last 24 hours....... Karma. Says I should too..

BTW. My son has taken up drinking coffee again so the stop was not needed and the Caribou Coffee tastes terrible, it is acidity like it is 5 hours old.

BTW it stopped raining as soon as we hit the steps, It did not even register in the rain gauge.

Good morning all....still drizzling here. I let the chicks out to free range unsupervised today (working a double AGAIN) hope I don't regret my decision.

I was almost late because I was digging worms for my sick chick this morning. Of course she walked right by them and didn't even give them a second glance???? (they slowly slithered off the plate and into the dirt- luck was on their side today) BUT.....she did drink an entire 6" (around) puddle of water when I let them out of the coop this morning! I had to refill the puddle with water from their water dish because I didn't want her to stop! (she is sooooo skinny) Tried to give her some garlic, oregano and scratch seed this morning too but she walked right by. At least she ate sweet potato, seed and veggies last night.

She also seems to be a "little" stronger today and her tail is more up than down but I don't want to jinx it.

On a more upbeat note....I watched about 10 chicks try to catch a chipmunk last night. It was really quite comical. I swear the chippie was playing with them!

Had to have a conversation with one of my adolescent roo's last night. I really don't understand it but it is the same roo that has been jumping on my sick chick and pecking at her but last night I went to reach for her and the roo jumped at me as if he was going to attack???? Almost like he was protecting her? She sleeps next to him on the coop floor at night too. I am confused at his aggressive/passive behaviors towards her? I very politely mentioned the stew pot option for his attitude and I swear I could hear him throw me an indignant "harrumph" as he walked away!!

Well have a great day....back to paperwork.

I'll trade you my adolescent roo for yours. Mine is a beautiful Buff Orpington -PITA....he is really handsome but it ends there. Constantly picking fights with 2nd in line RJ (Ralphie Junior - A SS cockereal that is about to become first in line.) In 30 minutes of free range - PITA attacked the necks of 3 large Rainbows. My girls are 14 weeks old so they have no interest in his song or dance, and they sure as heck don't care for his neckings. PITA was going to be my daughter's fair rooster, at a mere 11 3/4 years old she looked him straight in the face and said "This behavior is unacceptable and you know it, you are no longer fair material.".....she followed it up by 20 minutes of armpit time. - I have got to give that girl more credit, I was concern about how I was going to break it to her that naughty chickens were not bearing our family name at the fair.
