Surviving Minnesota!

Siggie: your post makes me want to go clean out my feed bowls. Yah...you just never know with chickens. I wonder if Roger got his airway thing from Mold...? Did I keep the bowls clean enough? Probably not. You're making me think.

With all the things laying around for birds to pick up ...you just can't be sure. I had a bird eat a crumble of miracle grow a couple years ago. It took two days but she died from it. horrible horrible. She was a beautiful olive egger too.

It's live and learn alot of the times with these birds.
I know, right???! Did your bird walk on his elbows (I call them elbows...maybe they are her thighs?) She did that the first day. Now she can stand up but she still wobbles. Depending on when I look at her, her tail is up then it's down so she still is not out of the woods. I think she would be dead by now if it were Merek's. This has been going on since July 2nd. The other birds (mainly my roo's) are starting to grab her and peck on her neck when they walk by so I am going to crate her tonight. And I will monitor whether she is eating and drinking because it almost looks like she can't connect with the food on the ground???? Maybe because she can't focus on it? I don't know.

My head is swimming with all the STUFF I have been reading of late trying to pin point what this might be. None of the other birds are sick...only her. I noticed today that she is walking into the mesh on the run like she can't see it. Trying to get outside the run to the other birds. One of the symptoms of Aflatoxin poisoning is blurred or double vision...hmmmmm... well that fits. And Merek's has the classic paralysis "one leg forward, one leg back/ or still usable" symptom. Mine is not like that , both her feet are forward she is just wobbly and walks like a duck, flapping them like she has webbed feet (if I am drawing a good picture). I am going to check her pupils tonight when I get home from work.

I was in the process of working on all that when I got a call stating the person who was working this morning did not show up so here we go...dependable me has to pick up the slack

What a bargain! A free boat lift! Wow.... If I give you a free bunny will you haul it to Togo?

I will have to pass on the duck itch, I am anti anything waterfowl.

It was hard sending the Bunny to the happy clover fields in the sky, but if you saw what they have been doing to my garden.... Well, let's just say it made it easier...

Do you have your garden fenced in? Or did Judy already suggest that?

Siggie, Judy claims I make her cry a lot.......I think she makes me cry a lot...

Well if you would treat her nice, maybe she wouldn't have to cry so much, and then you wouldn't cry so much....or has Judy already suggested that???? (I see a pattern forming here)

Chickens can be so tough and scavenge on just about anything with no ill effects then all of a sudden they get 3 molecules of something and keel over.
I hope that is the case and I don't lose my entire flock - it would be a hard lesson to learn right out of the gate.

No heel walking that I can remember. But squatty I think. She definitely looked droopy those final days. Roger just coughed / sneezed alot. Poor birds.

Which reminds me it's that time of year to worm the flock. I saw a sulfur yellowish poo on the poop mat.

There are some implications in the above that I find staggering. It seems to imply I am somehow in error for something. We all know that cannot be....

I have decided to name my pesky little turkey. JJ Jr. or JJJ for short.

He is so imprinted on us it is unbelievable. I open the door to look at other poults or check on them and he is right there. We walk by the cage and he is at the wire chirping and pecking the wire to get out. When we take him out and hold him/her, he/she is perfectly happy. It crawled up on Judy's shoulder last night and got under her hair and was happy to spend time just chilling there.

I just added some new hatches from the incubator to the cage. He comes running and tries to crawl into my hand while I am putting birds in the cage. If I did not know better I would think this bird was becoming spoiled...

BTW this hatch is the first and only hatch this year for me. No one else can have any of these. I had a call and had to tell them "Sorry, I have no poults at this time" while holding JJJ...... I felt bad but the person did not seem to understand how I could not have any poults.

Also I received a text, a weird one. Someone wanting to know if I had 30-40 keets for sale. When I said I did, he said he would like to buy them all and he would give me $3 each...... I am getting better, I simply said, " I have no cut rate keets for sale today, good luck finding them at that price.........."

I must be getting wiser, the old me would have discussed things like, where the sun does not shine, and taking a walk off a pier... or telling him to go someplace really hot in the afterlife.... I was quite proud of myself...

Which brings us back to Siggie's post. See I am so refined it must be something wrong with Judy...

Mine isn't dropping her head oe sleeping a lot just looks like she's stumbling around in the dark..... do you worm with regular meds or naturally?

Regular meds. I had one bird with blackhead my first year...so mine get a good load of worms I think each year. I do do a rotation of 2 different kinds, though. Safegaurd, alternating with Valbazen.

Good morning

Oh yeah, we got rain don't have a rain gauge but it was more than a sprinkle :)
