Surviving Minnesota!

no idea. my darkest eggs come from my gold comets, so maybe one of them.

I am going to add some darker eggs I think to my layer flock, even as I cut down numbers and breeds. I have some Cuckoo maran roosters outside and I am noticing even with the larger single comb theirs is not taking damage like some other breeds. I am going to start saving some Maran eggs for hatching soon. They have been laying a couple weeks but they still seem a little small.

I had to bring another SS rooster into the barn last night. He was lethargic and the pain must have been terrible on his head.

This has been a nasty year for comb damage. Even Sven (my 2 year old EE) has taken some damage to the top of his comb. When a pea comb takes damage it is bad. But I have never had such a bad year for egg laying either.

I have important duties assigned me today by my supervisor. I need to go to the Pharmacy and pick up drugs, We met our deductible this year so we want to get them before the new year starts us all over. Judy has one that she is not sure if she wants to continue because she does not think it is working any better than the old cheaper one. I will get her last dosage of it today for her. The co-pay is $250 bucks on it. (Isn't getting old fun).

The other duty is more important, I ran out of Yukon Jack on my second hot cocoa last night (layers and Holms do not read this your too young) With New Years eve coming I need it so I can have my last good Hot Cocoa before bed tomorrow night. I am thinking I might try to stay awake until 11 or so. Not sure why, I for one will be glad 2016 is over, it was no better than 2015. Hopefully, next year will be better. I might even notice that huge 1% raise I got on my pension.

I also have to fill my "barrels" and waterers today so they are full when the cold hits next week. I so need to get the hydrant in the barn working this summer, or drive a sand point.(shhh do not tell the county).

Anyone have exciting New Years eve plans? I have to live vicariously though you young'uns that still party.

Morning everyone!
Holy crap is SD warm! Its supposed to be 40 today!!! My aunt and uncles house is super warm too, I am dying in here.
Last night we went to Jump Craze and Texas Roadhouse, today we are going ice skating and to the movies. I've been awake for the last 2 hours but they don't want up until 9-10 o clock usually.
I see you guys are supposed to get hit the first few days if January.
We're only supposed to get about 6 inches total.

Layers didn't you know Rapid City is the Banana belt of the Black Hills? You should have brought your banana boat suntan oil.

I am patiently waiting on Patsy to get me a dark egg any day here soon. Her hatch mate sister over at Shannon's has blessed them with a dark brown egg 2 days ago. Texted to me. It worked-I was jealous. So far my only 'short day' worker is Pearl, the lavender. Her egg is ocean blue. So I have a dozen and 1/2 eggs of ocean blue eggs right now.

DD is growing. BB season has her eating like a man in the house. I watched her Wednesday night she sat down with two banquet chicken breasts and ate them like a wolf. I'm not sure she chewed. This was at night before she went to bed and after supper.
Last night she told me she was going to make an omelet (after pizza supper) so I might be down 1/2 dozen eggs.

@Bogtown Chick I think that is so funny, your daughters eating now! I remember my son when he was in BB in high school he ate more the rest of us combined.

Layers way back when, right after Orville and Wilbur invented the airplane, I use to fly air ambulance to Pine Ridge ( it seemed like 2-3 times a week). The instrument to Pine Ridge back then was take the ILS into Rapid City and then scud run to Pine Ridge. We would stop in Pine Ridge many times and it was always nice compared to here.
Sometime they would have to ground Ambulance to Rapids as the weather was too low to scud run. You really should check out the Banana fields when you are there, they rival the ones here.
