Spent about an hour in the coop this afternoon and low and behold we have 6 chicks now!! If I counted correctly, my broody momma only has 1 more egg under her...what a dedicated momma! If the last egg hatches that will be a 100% hatch rate...wow! Now I can't wait to see if all 10 eggs hatch under my other broody momma? So I have 5 Barred Rock/Cochin mixes and 1 Blue Cochin. WOOHOO! No photos though because the cage is in the way now and there were several other hens all curious as to what I was doing laying on the floor of their coop!? (I am nuts, I know but that's the only way I could get a good look into the nest box due to the cage) didn't want them getting any ideas about hurting the chicks...they get all weird twisting their heads around and making noises when they hear the chirps of the chicks!

Erli sorry to read of your loss. It is always tough, even when anticipated.

Ralphie, there will be no thoughts related to chicken cuddling.

It is cool cloudy and breezy here. The chickens don't care, and they are out feasting on tender green grass shoots.

Jerry is teasing you with those photos of newly harvested fungi. With all your projects I don't think you will have time for mushroom hunting adventures ?

I just saw a cute blog article from a lady that blogs on her chickens and mixology. She's from California so you have to take that quirk with a grain of salt. But I have to say I was laughing pretty hard through the article. She cracks me up because she sort of swears like I do. The article is a coop tour and of course being a coop junkie...I had to read on. Here it is. So clever and funny and I think she keeps it real.

Californians make us northerners look sane.

You know, just because I make fun of those city chicken keepers and their pampered, over crowded dog-chickens, I am probably going to have to move back to the suburbs sometime soon... Better learn how to wall-paper a coop right now and how to diaper a chook, just to have a head start.
