Howdy...
morning, morning, morning....
Soooooo....I am wanting to add more color or diversity to my flock but.... With everything I have been reading, I am scared to death to buy from a poultry swap/show. I read on another thread about one guy who would happily try to pass off sick birds just to get some of his investment back???? Does this happen a lot?
I have strictly layers and am sad that every one of my Australorps last year wound up being roo'sOut of 5 Blue Cochins, 4 were hens!! So I am hoping this is a trait that can be passed down??? That's a question for you breeders....can a higher hen to roo ratio be passed down or is that just a luck of the draw kind of thing?
I don't want 25 or anything like that so I am thinking a hatchery is not an option, I'm just looking for 2 -3 different kinds to add some color. I didn't get ANY Wyandotte chicks out of my brood this spring which would have been kinda cool.... My 2 Wyandottes didn't even appear to be breeding with the roo's this spring (no bald spots on their heads like all the others) The chicks I do have are pretty fantastic though, especially the all black ones! Hoping they are pullets!!! They are between 4 - 6 weeks old and so far no signs of redness in their combs (keeping fingers crossed).
If you want color I recommend EEs. Just patiently wait for your Cochins to go broody again and then give them some eggs... OR buy some chicks and set up a brooder... I don't know if Ralphie is selling EE eggs anymore or not... If not I have some or they are super easy to buy local...
