Surviving Minnesota!

Great! That sounds like a plan! No more artificial brooders for me anymore I LOVE letting the broody momma's do all the work. It avoids the mess on my front porch! Can I expect my two Cochins to go broody more than once a year? They are almost done raising this batch...the chicks were staggered hatches so we still have little ones that are only 3 - 4 weeks old. The chicks already wander away much of the time but always come running back when the mommas call.

And I trust getting eggs from one of you more than a show where I don't know anyone or know anything of their flocks.
If they are like my Cochins they will try to raise 2-3 broods a year! My favorite parts about my Cochins is that they are such good mamas! If you want I have all sorts of eggs... EEs and am get 1-3 Buckeye eggs a day if you want some of them. Ralphie might be closer to you though  I am trying to sell some Buckeye eggs right now so if you would want some of them along with some EEs I will have them ;)

morning, morning, morning....
Soooooo....I am wanting to add more color or diversity to my flock but.... With everything I have been reading, I am scared to death to buy from a poultry swap/show. I read on another thread about one guy who would happily try to pass off sick birds just to get some of his investment back???? Does this happen a lot?

I have strictly layers and am sad that every one of my Australorps last year wound up being roo's :barnie Out of 5 Blue Cochins, 4 were hens!! So I am hoping this is a trait that can be passed down??? That's a question for you breeders....can a higher hen to roo ratio be passed down or is that just a luck of the draw kind of thing?

I don't want 25 or anything like that so I am thinking a hatchery is not an option, I'm just looking for 2 -3 different kinds to add some color. I didn't get ANY Wyandotte chicks out of my brood this spring which would have been kinda cool.... My 2 Wyandottes didn't even appear to be breeding with the roo's this spring (no bald spots on their heads like all the others) The chicks I do have are pretty fantastic though, especially the all black ones! Hoping they are pullets!!! They are between 4 - 6 weeks old and so far no signs of redness in their combs (keeping fingers crossed).
I have my gold and silver laced Wyandottes pulled out right now for breeding. If you want eggs of just some chicks hatched out let me know I can do some for you. I also have my barred rocks and buff Orpington so pulled out. I will be separating for black sex linked or breeding my ISA browns with and the lone RIR hen with the RIR roo this weekend.

Siggie, I happen to have around 20 teen age EE I want t get rid of. I am going to be eliminating all of them from my flock... slowly as they die off.

I am going down to under 40 hens by fall.. (Not including toads).

I have some interesting colored birds and eggs of most colors, if you're interested...

And to the selling sick birds at swaps and CL It happens way more than you can even guess..

My husband had a bout of chicken math at the local ag partners today... we were just supposed to pick up 3 ducks..... he ordered 10 chicks when we picked up ducks. Looks like chicks are being picked up Monday. So far one Americana (ee) 2 blrw. Some faveroles and a hatchery choice rare... all from hoover

Do you know which hens lay which colored eggs?

WOW! Very cool. How do the Buck Eyes lay and the EE's lay? I would love to get some eggs from you if my broodies start sitting again.
