Klop, this is Big Betty. She's 6 and still laying a few eggs a week. I love my Sussex!

Ohhhhh I like her! Hmmmmm. I seem to want them all!

This afternoon i took advantage of the warm weather to plow down the snowpack on my driveway. I scraped down to the grass up near the house in a few places. The chickens found the grass and are having a hay day! DW and I have been sitting at the window watching them and snuggling our sleeping dogs. How fun!

While watching we were discussing what our favorite part of having chickens is. Hers is the awkward wings back/flapping run they do when she calls them for treats. Mine tied between their snoring/cooing at night on the roost and how they scratch to look for food. Left foot scratch, right foot scratch, step back and look for goodies... repeat!

What is your favorite thing your chickens do?

So at chores tonight one of my kittens, socks, snuck into the coop behind me and was exploring. One of the RIR hens in the nest didn't appreciate his presence

She was letting everyone know how she felt about it!

I love how they run to me yelling 'the food lady is here '!

I love hearing them coo & purr in the nest box. And watching the rooster tell his hens "here is a treat come and eat it" and they come running.

My Sussex look like some kind of manic wind up toy when they are running toward me. Then there are those sweet content chicken sounds. Guess those are my favorite things. I do love my Speckled Sussex! They are easy going girls. Don't cause problems but aren't push overs. Holm, I love Cochin too, just can't handle the leg feathers. By the way, the SS get more white tips the older they get. So their feather patterns change each year.

Believe it or not I love Rogers protectiveness of the hens. The gallantry presenting the best morsels... Or the seduction whatever it may be. Them recognizing my car 1/2 way down the driveway as I pull in to the yard. They're there to greet me. The contented cooing and purrs at night when they are at roost. I'm still in awe of their homing into the coop each and every night. What a livestock blessing it is if you think about it. And the softness of their feathers. They are very soft creatures.

But there's nothing like your turkey hopping into you lap & falling asleep. You can feel their whole body relax.
