Surviving Minnesota!

Ralph there is a person working on a pea combed Aussie. She has the second generation and will be hatching from them this spring.

Is this your first season with Buckeyes, Bogtown? Did you have any males over winter? I am thinking of adding a group at some point in the future, probably not this year. Wondering how the males' combs do in the winter, frostbite wise. I am pretty sure I solved my frostbite issue, but had no single-combed types this winter to be sure. I think that free-range nestbox is a good idea. I will have to see if I can knock something together with The Boy...
Dandelioness:
I'm into my second year with this one bird. I have just one. A hen. As someone said the comb is great for our winters. Perfect Type. Not one bit of frost bite. They are bigger/stockier birds. And I see her eating alot more feed than my other layers. I may be full of melarkey here or don't know my head from my tookus...but I think as a dual purpose meat/egg bird she has a higher protein demand. And that's why she eats. Although I had a glutunous EE once. And she actually passed due to fatty liver disease and internal hemorrhage. So not sure if this is a general characteristic of buckeyes or if she is has her own individual trait like my EE had. I think it might be the protein drive and given the egg today....my thoughts are is that she is at a good healthy weight for her type and not overly fat if laying eggs with out difficulty. If not in the nest.

Only breed developed by a woman and recognized Poultry-Powers-that-Be. I like her....but she does not fit in. She is often on her own...I guess as a "different" bird. They are so prejudiced -->chickens. So I do recommend a flock of sisters. She is not as thrifty on food as I would like a laying hen to be. And after giving her a try...I don't think I will do more of these birds. Only my two cents and my need for laying hens only.

Her full user is Minniechickmama. I am going down to her place around the end of the month. A little later than I wanted but she will have cute little bunnies then that I might be able to visit... Or convince someone to let me take one home...

Its official! Mr. T is a belly button! He has been cornering my Cochin roo and chasing him! This has never happened before... But he has a hen this spring...

So you see any leghorn traits in that hen . It takes time but can be done . I borrowed dominant white from leghorn . This is from a couple of years ago .
