Surviving Minnesota!

Uh-Oh. So I went home. Went down to Dixie right away to see if all was well in the broody coop. No Dixie. Go to lift the egg box lid on the main coop and there she is sitting on a freshly laid buckeye egg. Broody coop just became a version of broody jail. Only eggs, food and water are provided for her and it's dark , but she can't get out for the rest of today. After lunch and before I headed back to work.... She was setting on her designated eggs, and she growled at me. I wouldn't mind putting her in the main coop with the eggs, but with the egg eating labrador and heavy footed wyandottes and buckeye, I'd be worried the hatching eggs would be at risk over the next 21 days. I quickly talked myself back into keeping her in a private broody coop.

I could send you my egg eater Labrador and the two of them would be so busy fighting over the egg, everything would be safe....

I wont have birds ready by then... But who cares! I might go! Let me know if u go!
It sounds like it's not really a serious show, more just for fun with awards for prettiest bird, ugliest bird, weirdest crow/call, smallest and biggest. Unless something comes up (like I end up working) I plan on going.

Holm you bring your skill for selling Ice to Eskimos and I will get you stuff to sell....

Not related to chickens but Crow Wing County fairgrounds is having an Agate & Mineral Show the weekend before that. May 7th and 8th. Any rock hounds out there-this is a fun experience.

I just picked up two pair of Italian Owls at the post office this morning. They were shipped from central Illinois on Monday and although they were supposed to be here Tuesday they did not arrive until this morning. I knew it would happen that way, as I have quite a lot of experience with shipping and receiving live birds. The USPS has gotten much slower in their deliveries since they have closed many processing centers.
The tracking system has become almost a joke as well, because it seems nothing gets updated until the shipment arrives at the final destination. It is tolerable with adult birds but with baby chicks it could be a problem.

Too bad I sold FredZilla my mean runner drake, he could have won the ugliest bird award, the meanest bird award, and the fattest duck award!

Italian Owl pigeons?

well.... it has reached a point where you can smell the baby chicks in the basement when you walk in the door. that means it is time for them to make the move! i hope that i can jump them right from the basement brooder to the tractor with a heat lamp. we are on and off rain right now and i worry about the dampness so we will see how much it dries up tomorrow

they are getting big enough to jump the brooder walls too

I am expecting 15 day old Cochin bantams any day now, and my broody Cochin hen has 4 almost seven week old chicks. If I took her four chicks away from her and gave her the new chicks would she accept them? Her own chicks do not call for her when she is not around but if she can hear them she will try to get to them.
