Surviving Minnesota!

The chicks are half her size, yes they come in white (I have one) or black. The closest color to brown would be chocolate, but they are hard to find, so then it would be partridge, red, or buff. Her chicks are half breeds and I'm only selling the boys.

Or Dun which is a Cochin color.

EJB believe or not I have sold over half of my waterfowl. Minnesotanice got my Muscovys and some other non BYCers got the rest. I only have a Pekin hen and a pair of geese left. Although if L&M has geese today I may get some... Probably not though. I need some EE's and my sister wants Silkies. I dont want those little puff balls! I coild just as well smack a "eat me" sign on them for the hawks!

Holm, I always have EE's, Sven is a great blue egg Daddy..

Now, I need to know...Did you have any guilt pangs after unloading your worthless ducks on poor unsuspecting Minnesotanice?

Careful what you say about silkies, I plan to get some.

Never heard of it, I'll have to look it up, maybe it's like buff.

ETA: looked it up, looks like a light chocolate or grayish, maybe like a khaki polish? There weren't very many good pics. Prob hard to find like chocolate.

Dumb question...totally off topic....how do you pronounce "Cochin"  long O, short O and is the ch like a k or a ch sound????

Mr. T is becoming quite the popular boy! I cant tell him this though. He is already to full of himself!

Nathan there was abput two weeks worth of goose eggs so about 12-14 and 15 turkey eggs. And the turkey hen lays everyday!
Do you think its your geese or the incubator?

I pronounce it like this: short o, and the ch is a ch sound. So "kauchen". No idea if that's right though.

One chick has hatched so far this morning! A beautiful OEG/Maiden Rock cross. I'll take pictures when the rest hatch later!

I have PILES of horse manure...come and get it!! I will be working on the pasture this weekend :)

By the time I drove to the edge of the world, where you live and back, I could buy 20 loads of compost in the gas savings...

Does Finland still have the great pizza place?

No pizza place anymore :( We have Four Seasons which is like a steak house/burger place and Our Place which is just a mom and pop restaurant. Wildhurst Camp Ground has pizza but its the cardboard frozen stuff. Come on...you wouldn't drive to the ends of the earth for prime poop???

Wow she had fun! sorry :(

I could take pictures of bird feeder destruction this morning, I wonder if they would be covered under homeowner insurance.haha we had three bears here last night, one was right up on the deck looked like it wanted to come in our bedroom patio door but the dog barked like crazy and scared it. Then we noticed another under the bird feeders and then saw the third one! at that time they all left. Some of those metal feeders are expensive! last year a bear bent them up but DH was able to straighten them, now I don't know if they are fixable. Thank god they didn't bother the chickens!
Oh No Erli: 3 bears in a yard is much worse than a Sadie. I cannot believe I am saying that right now...but I just did. One Bear in my yard will take care of hundreds of dollars worth of apple trees, and bird feeders. Horrible destructible things. I actually quit feeding the birds --other than my own chooks. The deer figured out the feeders and it got pretty expensive and plus attracting in the bear. No thanks.

Hey Everyone,
Besides being new to raising my chickens, I'm also new to gardening. LOL. Anyway, I visited a friend last week that lives on 8 acres in Mayer, MN and I noticed that her dirt was pure black and beautiful. I came home and realized my dirt here is brown, sandy, and ugly. I want to till about 0.25 of my land for a very large garden that my mother and I can work on together. I figured I would add black dirt to my land once it's cleared and tilled, but will I have to continue that every year? Also, I am composting, but since I'm new at it, to me it seems like it is taking forever. I've researched burying fish and I might do that too, since the hubs loves fishing and I don't like to eat fish, however for a garden that large, I guess I need more advice on how to make my ugly soil work for me. Thanks in advance!

Hi..

Someday your dirt will get better. Elk river composting has compost at a great price. I am close to them so I have little trucking fees but I got 22 yards for $150. I figure another 400 loads and my yard and garden will be good.
I was just going to say that a $200 dumptruck of black dirt will solve your problem. One thing about Sandy soil though...it is good for growing melons. My grandparents lived in the very SE corner of MN and had sand/limestone bluffs around them ...garden was super sandy and they grew watermelons like crazy.

Chicken compost is coming your way soon. But until then I would suggest the dumptruck of dirt.

Well Ralphie here goes. The birds are biting at Holm's due to the fact that they are forced to associate with waterfowl. Among other problems with them, the beaurocrats claim they are the primary source of the AI disease.
I anticipate that all rational Minnesotans will convert to chicken breeds with cushion, pea or rose combs as they become educated poultry keepers.

I wish that I had $1 for every time I heard someone say " at my age this is the last vehicle I will be purchasing". I would have quite an accumulated nest egg.

Rational thinking is in the process of leaving me, and even at my advanced age I am planning to start another flock of chickens. Variety is the spice of life they say, and I want some that lay white eggs. To avoid having to deal with winter comb damage I have decided to get Appenzeller Spitzhaubens. They may even be considered a foo foo breed by many, but I can deal with the ridicule. I have much experience with that, as I have been married for quite some number of years. I was smart enough to trick a younger woman into marrying me so that I would have someone to care for me at my advanced age.

Ralphie, here is something to think about. The used car dealers have preferred GM cars and trucks due to ease of repairs and less expensive parts costs, as relates to Ford and imports. In addition they generally have a better ride and better fuel economy over the years.

These are all the words of wisdom that I am allotted to disseminate at one time, so I am signing off.

Ooo...Whats the foo foo breed you're considering EJB? I promise I won't tease you.

Long O with a cha-cha cha sound for the CH.

I don't mean to pick on our new Siggie. But I had endless access to horse manure B. C. (Before chickens) and would bring it home to my garden and it really was a poor fertilizer. Talked to my Dad (old farmer) about it and he confirmed that it is not the best and for the efforts of hauling and tilling in to the garden it gave less than satisfactory growing results. Chicken manure is the best and richest of the livestock manure.

I pronounce it cOshin. I used to say it like it sounds, Cochin. Whether or not its right idk but thats how I say it. It seems like everyone pronounces stuff differently.
