How do you know if they aren't getting enough grit, impacted crop? undigested food in the poo?

Undigested food. I started seeing undigested hay/greens and oats in the poop that first winter. Within a week of seeing that and putting two and two together my Dad asked me if I had grit for them (Old farmer checking up on me). I said no I didn't. LOL. Rookie year is always a humbling year.

I wear a mask when i'm cleaning up daily in the coop as well, the times I don't, if I forget it, I can feel it in my lungs...

It is no good to assign him work if he wants to do homework! lol But, i've read some of his articles on here, they are fantastic!

Glad to have you here! Like BogtownChic said, I do have the flat panel heater as well. I think it takes the "edge" off, -20 below is soooooo cold! I'm a big baby and my chickens are my girls... so, I do spoil them. I turn on the heater when it is going to be 0 or below or more,

with my heater on in the henhouse it was 5 degrees this morning in there, still cold, but not "bitter cold"

Oh yeah, I was also going to ask, did you cover your run in plastic to block the wind and keep the snow out? You'll also want a dust bathing area so they can bath, they like to do that even in winter.

It helps keep the mites and lice down as well.

oh oh, I better lay off of the treats. I just feel so bad for them out there

Hey Ralphie: Did you read what my in-coop temp was this morning with that Flat Panel and reflectix lined coop. => -10F. Still dang cold. I know I could probably do without it now....now that everybody is dubbed and trimmed...etc. But BRRRRRRR. That -25 this morning is a nasty nasty bit of weather. I just like being able to do it I guess if it makes them feel better without total spoiling. During their little feather exams I am impressed with the down at the base of those feathers. Ooo...those Minnesota chickens grow toasty feathers.

U need geese ducks and turkeys. They warm coops up like no other bird can do!!
