Yes I use the spring type (as linked)
I drilled the 3/8 hole in the Bucket but didn't tap it. Not enough material. I also used o rings as you described. No leaking issues for me

I thought those were the spring ones by the yellow plunger, I could not tell for sure. The only thing I cannot use them on is my chicks. they just cannot push the springs down. I wish they had some for them. I did order some pop bottle waterers to try on chicks though.

Have any of you ever used the Nipple waterers.
If I am able to get the chickens I want, and cull the ones I don't want I may get the Nipple waterer but I want to see if you guys have had good experience with them

People that use nipples swear by them, my chickens refuse to use them. They would die of thirst before they touch a nipple! I have some you can have if you want to try them. I think they are the vertical ones.

Ok. Thanks. My chickens drink out of rabbit water bottles, so I think they would work. I just have to make sure they will work for me first

It really is true that if you don't want a hen to be broody, she will be, and vice versa. The duck that I want to keep laying is broody, and the hen that I want to go broody won't!

Give the eggs that you want under the hen to the duck, maybe she will teach the chicks to swim!

Beings I am 20 some posts behind. I love it!

I will jump in on the drinking cups. I use them but mine are from Amazon. There are two types of cups those look like the ones with the springs, they do not leak like the springless ones do.

I drill a hole and tap it for threads, I think it is a 3/8 fine thread tap. I know it was one that was hard to find, as I never used it for anything else. I also put a O-ring behind it. I found 3/8 -9/16 works best.


The PC's are a dilemma, I so like them and want lots this summer, so I will not give up on them. Maybe if I take Ed's Easter Egger Girlfriends away he will fall in love with the PC's. If the girls ever get over being broody. I may move them out of the chick building if that keeps them broody.

I suppose someone has answered the water cup issue before I get this posted.

Thanks Ralphie & Klop Klop! I'm going to copy this info down so I can match it up to what we've done/will do. We have so many buckets from when we mudded the house. They clean up really nice and I hate to waste them. So many uses for buckets on a farmette. I bet there's a thread on BYC specifically for ideas on what to do with buckets.

I have to share a few pictures of our new family member(s)....

Meet Harry the Mini Lop. It's been an adventure around our house. Ducklings, a bunny, and chicks. DH is about done with the hutch, so it'll be nice moving him into the garage until the weather perks up. He's a bit of a Houdini in his cage.











On a chicken side note, I'm hoping my BCM pullets start laying soon. They're getting some good red around the face. They're about 22 weeks now. I need more eggs!

Our rabbits have found all the escape routes in the "rabbit proof" housing we've constructed!! LOL

They come back to the pens later, and the dogs leave them alone, though. Haven't had an esapee for a few months, but there hasn't been all the tempting green out there, either.

I have BCMs, too. I think they are some of my favorite birds.

ETA: And I have an oversized rottie, too! We're getting him back into condition, though. It's like there's a bear in my yard all the time. LOL

I use 35 gallon barrels with these too. I put 3-4 cups on each one and set them around the farm yard. I just take the tops off and spray them with the power washer to clean them once or twice a month, I do use ACV in them that helps keep algae down.

I tried these once as well and the birds waited and waited for me to fill the regular fount. You cannot teach an old chicken new tricks apparently.
