Surviving Minnesota!

Thanks! I didn't even know it was there until I held her, her feathers cover it up.

When the neighbor dog attacked my hens (killed five) I didn't even notice the injuries to one of my hens until the next day. She was still running with the flock. I treated her woods and kept her confined. She's survived, which just amazes me. She'll wear a saddle for a while to protect her from her teammates.

They look like they are blue milles.

Some do, some don't. I think most do though. I'm not sure with the milles but I know my chocolates sure fade through the summer. They are such a deep, rich chocolate in the winter and now, with the sun, they are already getting lighter. By the end of summer, they look really washed out.

My sister and I went to Waverly, Iowa for the swap there this weekend. I came home with the sweetest pair of Porcelain old english. I'll try to get pics but my camera is a pita and only works when it wants to-need to get a new one.
Is the rooster you sold to me blue? His wings seem not quite black. I know what you mean about chocolate fading! My khaki campbell hen who started out a rich deep dark turned a very creamy almost light tan on her back.

Ralph I am almost positive Blackie is Lucky's papa! He has black down some of his legs which I see in all of my Australorp crosses. Was Blackie in with your Dixie hen at one point?

Ok EJB here is what I thought. Minnie had a beautiful set up! It was interestimg and fun to see all her different birds there and all the beautiful green grass!!

Ralphs set up is awesome too! In fact I might have to learn how to build a breeding tractor/pen like his for my Buckeyes! I think the only thing I would do different is just get a small tarp and cover them so they dont bleach in the sun before shows! Other than that everything was amazing! Beautiful birds, beautiful set up and adorable dogs!!

Btw I meant cover the top of the run so the birds dont bleach. Although Ralphs birds didnt look bleached!

I cover my birds with OSB sheets or tarps in really strong sun/heat. They also go into the coops. Also the bird will only be in those during breeding season. Besides Bleached is good, the SOP is aimed at lighter colored Creamers.....

My flock is laying low today. the sun is out and beating down! dogs, cats, and chickens are all finding a vehicle or something shady to hide under!

Im working hard and getting my spring tan going :) i need the mail man to come and drop off my tractor parts!

I am somewhat disappointed that we have not received a thorough report regarding the Minniechickmama poultry operation. I am also somewhat disappointed that after a couple of beautiful days it is 38 degrees here, and the wind is off the lake at substantial velocity. This means it seems 10 to 20 degrees colder than the actual temp. Ralphie, I am sure you remember those days and are glad that you have moved to the Minnesota Banana Belt!

Jerry, that is why it is called fishing as opposed to catching. Those scaled rascals often don't wish to cooperate?

Ralphie, good to read that your Dominique hatch was such a success. On the other hand the Buckeye hatch was not too good. How many of the White Sport Legbars do you have at this point?
Are you still attempting to sort out which birds are producing them, or do you have that figured out?

EJB, I remember going years at a time without seeing the sun, unless I drove to Cromwell or Floodwood. Winter jackets were never put away.

Jerry, what kind of fish di you get?

I have my second Buckeye hatched!

I have 2 living white sports, Murphy's law has struck with them. One Fail to thrive, One trampled in a chick stampede. and the last one committed suicide.

I have 2 CLB roosters, I have each rooster in a pen with 3 or 4 hens. I have not had a sport in awhile, so I took the roosters out and changed the group they were in. I mark the eggs when I gather them so I know which group they are from. Once I get the group down I will find the individual hen. I have a person that wants to buy a group of mature hens, but I am refusing to sell them until I know which one has the white babies, and even then they will not go cheaply....... When I sell the eggs I ask people to tell me if they get a white one.

Ooh I didnt know that! Light color in Buckeyes is as bad as dark color in Legbars!

Klop... I'm not that far west of you and its totally overcast and a few drips so far. Supposed to rain into tomorrow... Got the lawn mowed quick and farm chores done. Cleaned up the garden a little more and most of my perennials are coming in nice. My asparagus even poked up yesterday too.

Ralphie... If you really want to get into the fufu breeds, let me know. I have tons of silkies out of the shell now and limited numbers of bantam salmon faverolles and polish (maybe even frizzled ones too). I breed only for the show ring so they are culled hard.

In SW ND it's been foggy and drizzled all day
