Surviving Minnesota!

I have been cheating with the broodies . I give them incubator hatched chicks . It is a real pain to manage a broody . Some quit when moved . Some break or kick out eggs . When done right they are excellent . I let them brood a week or so and then stick chicks under them and close the nest front with something like pegboard or wire . Next morning they are bonded . Just let one out into a rabbit hutch today . Returned one to the flock that was brooding the mail order chicks . They are 10 days old and started good . Got another starting to brood . I will give her some of next weeks hatch .

That's a great idea!!

My cherry tomato is blooming .
Bought a 4 pack taday .
Cut the tops off leaving a leaf or 2 . Put cuttings in solo cup pots . No need to use rooting hormone . Put in the shade in a warm spot . In the house since it is chilly . They will wilt some . Within a week or so they will perk up . Meaning roots are growing .

Your frugal garden tip .

Well... Off to find a turkey! Today is day two of turkey hunting and we havent heard a thing. The day before our opener there were three jakes in the hay field but they must have left now. There was a flock of 20 in the hay field 2 weeks ago and now nothing!

That's a nice looking bull!!

Our barn cat had 3 kittens, they are all gray colored.
5 more days until Dakota calves!

I give up on my broody, for the last 3 days the other hens have been kicking her out of the nestbox she was sitting on the eggs.
Tonight I will put her in a less used nest box and hopefully the other hens won't make her move

So I candled today again. I see shadow (yolk?) in the Bogtown special. And the welsummer is a little frisky chick.

I felt one of my EEs abdomen and she has egg yolk peritonitis. She is 4 years old. She has not appeared outwardly sick but had poopy fluff. Sure enough. Will put her down when I see her struggle or suffering if not sooner.

That CLB is gorgeous holm. What a pretty little hen.

Jerry loving the gardening photos. So much green going on down there!

Quote: It jumped up to about 90. I think maybe I should have just left it. The high humidity freaked me out, so I kept opening it to let some moisture out. Frustrating. You hatch in styro bators, don't you? I kept it around 65-70 after lockdown, but when they hatched, it jumped. I had all the holes open the whole hatch, including a few I added, so I don't think that was the problem.

I tried it dry, but it stays too low (under 20) so I add a small thing of water to keep it in the 30s. That is what happened to me, too, it got up to 90 when they started hatching. Thanks. :)
I should never have an afternoon Dr. appointment...
I normally want to be first one in at 7 so I can get home and get to work...I have a 3PM today and all I have done is waste the day because " heck, there is no sense starting that, when I just have to stop and get cleaned up for the Doc."

I do the same thing if I have something in the afternoon. :p

I have done that, but like to use proven mamas.

I would try separating her. Then nobody can bother her or her eggs. ;)

I have to stop putting eggs in my jacket/sweater pockets. How many times do I have to lean against something while doing chores, just to squish an egg or two before I learn? LOL

I would separate my broody but the only place we can put her is occupied by a cat..(long story)

I squished 28 last week when I forgot I had eggs and I did a flip on the trampoline
