Surviving Minnesota!

Hello everyone!

I am so excited! Today was show day and i couldnt be happier! So in our first show my sister placed Grand Champion and I took Reserve! I was thrilled! Then came showmanship! I only got a blue ribbon (which is still great!) And my sister got reserve champion in showmamship! After that we had State fair line up. Thats where all the grand and reserve champions of every class line up so the judge can pick who goes to state. WELL... Minnie I was wrong, my sister cant go to state. Anyways my siter took Overall Grand Champion and some kid with a goose took reserve! Well since Adah cant go and I wad runner up I am going to State!!! AAAAHHH!!! I AM STILL SO EXCITED FOR MY SISTER!! If anybody is going to the State Fair let me know!

Thank you all for the kind words and THANK YOU MINNIE FOR HELPING ME OUT SO MUCH!!!

I am going to the State Fair on Thursday afternoon, August 25th Holms. I hope you are there by the afternoon so I can meet you.

HELLOOOOO MINNESOTA! i just happened upon this thread and i got so excited bc i'm one of you! haha I'm from MN (Lake of the Woods, specifically) My husband is from this desolate, arid wasteland called Kansas City and to say I haven't quite acclimated yet is an understatement.

Anywho, I was just wondering were any of you are from exactly? Its been extremely hot and humid here and my chickens haven't been loving that which we have in common. I miss Minnesota and the weather! (I was always a snow fan) though I am wondering how you all team with winter and if you heat your coops? Im not planning on heating mine, just based on what i've read, but maybe some of you guys from up north can give me your opinion on that?

I live in South Western North Dakota. I don't heat mine during the winter, instead we put thatches in and we stuff straw in-between the thatches and the wall. Works really well

So your in Kansas City Mo now? I would not heat my coop at all there. I turn on a low wattage radiant panel if it drops to -5 or -10 F. I'm not sure the birds even need that. My most dangerous time is rain turning to ice and cold --> high humidity/ rain then freezing on birds feathers and combs. Usually Halloween time.

Blixbaby Farm, I am located in Hermantown. I do not heat my coops, but I have learned not to keep chickens with large single combs. the large single combs experience freeze damage in sub zero conditions. In your environment there should be no need for heat. It is essential in any environment to maintain a coop that has adequate ventilation to facilitate a low humidity condition. Hot or cold, high humidity is detrimental to poultry.

Holm, congratulations to you and your sister. I had no doubt that you would do well, and here is wishing you good luck at the state fair. That is sure to be a fun and educational experience for you.
