I haven't had an issue with mites in leaves, but I also use DE everywhere. That may or may not make a difference.

If I can get the leaves to dry out and bagged I may give it a shot in the coop. I'll see how shavings go this time around, too.

got half of my steel roof up today. did not take any dives. I have about 1/3 of the screws yet to put in on the half. some of the steel was a bit wet so i put a string of screws across the top and bottom only. i can put up the rest tomorrow when it is dry. no need to be risky!

i delivered some eggs today to a regular customer and he was praising how much he loves our eggs. He said that they are so rich and that he could taste the difference since we started feeding them pumpkins. said he can taste it in the eggs. can that be? i suppose it makes sense that the diet impacts the flavor, im just surprised he says the eggs have a rich pumpkin taste.

actually thats a great combination. No mites on the leaves. I have never had mites on the girls. But if i do anything i sprinkle some DE on the floor occassionally. I also put DE in their bath "tub" and in their nesting boxes AND i have always used Apple Cider Vinegar in their water. 1 Tablespoon per gallon. We have a 3 gallon pail with tubing that goes down to an automoatic waterer. Soon we need to get a heated water bowl. bbbrrrrr

Alrighty folks, I've been thinking about going rogue and put pine shavings down in my coop this winter instead of the hay I always use. I'll keep hay in the nest boxes. I think I said the same thing going into last winter, but was never brave enough to try the switcheroo. Thoughts on shavings vs. hay? I don't supplement heat in my coop if that makes an opinion difference. This could be a temporary or permanent change.

MinnesotaNice, I like Shavings in the winter. I thicken it up a bit more on the coop floor for Winter. I've dabbled with hay and straw in the winter. I could feel the warmth of it on the floor vs. shavings. But I did notice the chicken crap stuck on hay/straw rubbed off easy on the chicken feet. I think their feet stay cleaner with shavings. Kind of a weird thing since they don't seem to care what they step in. But I guess I care. LOL. I keep Straw in the nest boxes. They prefer that material or long grasses for nesting.

I went to Brainerd. I got a drop ceiling system from Menards. Easy to pick out and up. Got back at 3:30-4. I spray painted the white grid pieces Bronze to match my 2x2 ceiling tiles. And then started putting it up. After 8 hours and many cuss words later:
I have a ceiling in my basement bathroom. I quit at midnight and cut the last border tiles this morning.

Today I was a piece of crap-ola. I watched TV. Took a nap. Made a Salad for supper. I guess I did one load of laundry and mopped the kitchen floor. Not entirely made of crap I guess.

Minnie: I'm so pleased that you like Junior. I love seeing photos of your good looking boys/ Juniors brothers.

Ralphie I want to have day of building my own fences and chicken stuff that could be done around here. but you are such a salesman sometimes I feel like i should come down and help with a Toad Fence...

BC I love zombie movies/shows. If its scary I like it. All my siblings love it and so do my aunt and uncle so we are kind of making a thing of watching it together.

Oh holm.

I will say that DD and DS have been getting pressure from their friends to watch those shows and they will on occasion. But they usually come home and tell me about it and how they hated watching it. LOL. Oh they are so my kids.

My first scary movie a friend made me watch was 'the Shining.' I have never been the same since. Chuckie, Jason and Michael were stupid compared to Jack Nicholson.
