Oh man I miss my Token Silkie. I never thought I would. But I sort of do miss that Miss Muffet, Dixie.
There were issues in having her in a mixed flock though. So the PITA stuff I'm glad to be rid of. Getting pecked on her missing skull and the neurological symptom incident was scary, Pint sized so easily carried away by eagles, Broody alot!, And just generally bullied quite a bit. She didn't belong but she found her small niche in our flock.
Here I thought I was crazy for wanting a mixed flock and a token bird. This is reassuring that I am not alone in wanting "fish tank" chickens
Love him. And totally not against not wasting extra birds.why else have more than one crock pot?Speaking of ...."Token Birds" If you are not interested in a longish story; or do not condone eating extra roosters - please scroll! Lost my lil banty/serema roo "Merle" last fall. (RIP little Merle!)![]()
So on Friday last week, when I saw an ad on a swap site for "Free Bantam Roosters" I thought YAY! I can find a replacement! The first "hmmmm" should have been there was no photo. But they were about a year old and I thought well - I'll get them; find out which one (or two....) suits my flock the best - and then we can have little chicken nuggets from the others. No biggie. Right. Right? They were located 2.5 hours away and it just so happened that my brother was coming down THAT night to visit and that he would just happen to be able to stop after work to meet "Chicken Dude" and pick up these roosters for me. The second "hmmmm" should have been when my brother called me and told me that he couldn't fit his pick-up bed cover over the boxes and that he just ratchet-strapped them in for the drive. (Why so big of boxes? Banty roosters should almost fit in a shoebox on your lap?!) So, fast forward a few hours, after celebrating St. Patty's day with a few Irish drink etc with my family.... My DH and I are headed out the door headed home when I casually mention that there's something we need to load into the pickup..... The first box was surprisingly heavy. The second box, not so heavy, let out a massive "CHOOK CHOOK" when we moved it and yet I still thought "ohhhhh.....must be the whiskey!!!" (Third "hmmmmm") Imagine our surprise when we got home and opened the boxes up and found out we had the BIGGEST ROOSTERS WE HAVE EVER SEEN IN OUR LIFE. Nine of them! Into the quarantine pen they go; and to bed we go. So. Long story short. We have several pounds of frozen chicken breasts; and a new "Token" in my barn. I saved the best! Or so I thought. What do you think?

Poor thing looked like he didn't understand why the ladies weren't flocking.I made a change yesterday with my Foo-Foo's. I got tired of the rooster I had. He is either going to Pierz or the soup pot, I am not fussy which. He attacked me for the last time. He was not a happy rooster in his cell. I was thinking of changing rooster based on looks, so this guy lost twice. The new guy kind of had the gals worried they were trying to hide from him. Here is the new guy:And watch the girls reaction to the new guy.. IT is funny they were giving him a cold shoulder I think...
