Good news bad news, the empty lot between us and the chicken hating city neighbor has sold. Good news is that a house will be between her and us. Bad is that they are going to build closer to our side of their lot and they have a German shorthair hunting dog that will be living next to my coop! I really really wish we could move the coop to the other side of our house.

I'd like think they'll keep their dog on good behavior. You might have to get a fence up if you're letting your girls free range. Our neighbor's dog comes down and tries to get our chickens - that's an issue. They have offered compensation, but I tell them keeping their dog on their property is probably best. Sometimes my girls travel up their way and if they get grabbed, well, that's my fault. I can't be mad. I really think you'll be okay - just knock that conversation out before it has to happen over a dead chicken.

Had two males about a year ago and 5 littles for about a month this year, they're cute but terribly suicidal.

Suicidal?!! Are they friendly birds? How did you keep them and what do they eat?

If you handle them, the cots can be decently tamed, yes, but they're rather spazzy. Gamebird maintenance feed is what you're s'posed to feed them, I believe... I fed mine corn meal as per the advice of my neighbour. No idea if that's a good idea or not. The littles got gamebird starter.

What do you mean by keep them? Housing, or?
They're fairly simple to keep, well, the coturnix anyway. Other varieties are even harder, or so I've heard... All mine were cots.

maybe you can watch and see if you can catch the neighborhood kids that keep burning the new guys lumber pile and stealng his supplies....

Hi! I don't really post on here too much, but I've been having trouble finding things and thought I'd try local. I'm looking to make/buy cheap poultry transport crates for shows. Like wooden crates for standard sized poultry, most likely Lavender Orpingtons. I also want to make some for some Call Ducks I'll be getting. I always see everyone with them at the shows but I have never seen anyone selling them! And googling it has turned up nothing. Does anyone have some good plans to make cheap ones or know of anyone in MN or surrounding states that sells them for a lower price? I'm 16 and all of my money goes into my chickens so I want to spend as little as I can haha

Cheap and or easy do not seem to go well with poultry. Good luck and welcome.

A weekender, city person. Living on a lake isn't all it's cracked up to be. When we bought the property back in 94 it was quiet and nice here but has gotten crowded.
I put down a brush barrier years ago on the lot line so my hens wouldn't go in that direction towards the chicken hater lady's property and knowing someday someone would buy the lot between us. At one time I had some buff orpingtons and the hater called one morning to tell me they were in her yard and she would be letting her dog out soon so I may want to come get them, so I did of course. The BO's were so friendly and wanderers! after they quit laying I gave them to a lady I worked with that let them stay on her farm until they lived of old age or disappeared.... the brush barrier has kept the hens in our yard pretty well but now the new people might think it's an eye sore and want it gone. And dogs think nothing of it, mine included. So a fence might be the best thing.
