Looking for some knowledge and experience, two days ago, Peewee, one our lavender orps got stuck between the hay bales and the barn wall (steel) we don't know how long she was there, but she was cold and one her feet was a little swollen. Hannah brought her in the house warmed her up fed her got her to drink water and she was better could stand but not walk. We kept her in my daughters room and she was better today, but tonight she lay down and went down hill fast labored breathing got colder and less responsive. She passed in my arms. Is this a common scenario, trying to figure out what went wrong.

She was small compared to her siblings, a real sweetheart, very friendly. She will be missed. Any insights greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Warren

Warren I’m so sorry you lost her. It is hard to know why she got trapped. Chased by Hormonal cockerel? Bullied by others hens higher on the pecking order? Sometimes they just get themselves in bad spots they cannot get out of. I lost a silkie this way. Between a bale and the coop. I looked high and low for her for a week. No signs. Her sister called and cooed for her. Nothing. Found her remains in the spring when I pulled the hay bales away from the coop. Beyond sick that she was under my nose the whole time.
They do dumb stuff sometimes- usually because they’re scared. I imagine her stuck . Unable to get her fluff around those feet and legs and severe frost bite and dehydration. Being brought inside was best move for trying to save her . This can also be stressful and she might need electrolytes after that trauma. Her ticker might have given out. They can have heart attacks easily with stress. Especially in a poor health state already. We all know you did your best. Chickens will humble you beyond measure. Make a control freak completely nuts. Ask me how I know. Much sympathy and know we have been in your shoes and asked ‘why?’

MNchickMom you are in a chicken heaven there of a set up!

Turkey day has been good to us. Probably too good. Turkey coma going on here. Two days of it.

I’ve been knitting. Researching Norwegian pattern mittens. The patterns are called Selbus. I just love them. So I made my first mitten. Researched. Colors picked out for my coat. Knitted for three nights. Proudly laid out on the dining table.

I get home Wednesday evening after work to look at my selbu. It’s not on the table.

“Sadie...!”

You can throw an 8-ball through that hole. This dog is ready to go to its new home. Free! Who wants a chicken trained duck dog Pita? Hmmm?

So that’s what I’ve been up to. Knitting. Clickety click. And it appears there will be more knitting than I expected...?

A hobby is something one does for the enjoy of doing it and the enjoyment of your family members when your done (or others)..Apparently, Sadie knew you had gotten your enjoyment from making the mitten. Then when it was laid on the table for the other family members and it laid there a proper amount of time, Sadie decided to increase your joy from your hobby by showing you how much she enjoyed your new hobby! Good Dog! Thoughtful Dog!!

And look she even offered you a chance to learn a new hobby...Mending holes in knitted clothing. She is one genius dog. I wish I had a dog like her.

With Sadie in the house her kids have a ready made excuse for not having their homework done......

BC how old is Sadie? I think our youngest lab was three before she got out of the chew everything stage...Now she is in the older, "I can be a PITA and ignore you when I want" stage.
