Surviving Minnesota!

Ralphie you wont believe how friendly this Fom rooster is! He runs to his pen door when I open it so I can pet him and he just sits there and stares at me!

And then there is the Toad... That guy almost lost his head tonight... He “attacked” me tonight... Not sure why but he latched on to me and broke the skin lol.. He did it twice... I just reminded myself that I need him lol.

I am setting two Toad 2.0 eggs tonight along with some Orpingtons...

Ralphie, you must be getting soft in your old age. An avatar that is not of a mangled dux? I never thought I'd see the day.

Had a huge Bald Eagle in the yard... They have been here for the past 2-3 weeks and haven’t touched my birds yet. Never have lost a bird to hawks or Eagles and there are Red hawks that nest here and the eagles love the ponds. We also have a grey colored hawk that nests on the ground in the hay fields...

Hawks are one of the biggest issues I have except for stray dogs. I've lost several and interrupted many other attacks.

I expect to lose many of my Ameraucanas to them this summer. Being pen raised, I think, they don't have a clue what a hawk is and don't hang out by cover. They don't even look up when the roosters spout off a warning call!

Hopefully I get chicks before that happens... or maybe they'll get smart and run after only one or two attempts on their life. I don't think I'll let them out of the breed pen until they lay because I don't have a way to replace them if I lose them.
