Surviving Minnesota!

Hey folks,

Happy weekend, hope you all had a safe 4th. Been offline for a good long while, came back as it looks like I'm starting over, down to 4 hens. Lost 14 chickens over two days while they were free ranging to something. Never found bodies, just feathers all over. Seven gone one day, a week later another seven.

The irony is I've just hatched out my first go at eggs, so I've got re-inforcements on the way, from the chickens who got eaten.

Debating about getting more chicks now, or just waiting till next year.

RIP Buddy, the nicest Rooster!

So sorry to hear about your losses, Varagol. That sounds awful. :hit But what a blessing to have their offspring to carry on! I hope the babies all prosper and comfort you with their excessive, extravagant cuteness as only the wee ones can. :hugs

Spent all morning fixing and getting equipment ready for haying, and then spent from 1-8 this afternoon raking with Dad baling behind me, the official start of haying for us. We finished one field up above the creek bottoms. Mole hills weren't to bad up there I was able to stay in 5th gear and at 1200-1400 RPMs the whole time so it went pretty quickly.

I think state fair is in about 2 weeks, now that I say that I am slightly freaked out, birds are not ready and neither am I. Hopefully next year I will have birds that are better in condition with the 2 dozen eggs I have under thr broodies

Morning....

We got back from the frontier in one piece.

It was touch and go for a while.

I managed to pluck Holm’s guinea. Next time I will make sure it’s dead before I pluck it.

Speaking of dead, we were attacked by a NoDak’er. We were well within the boundaries of Minnesota too!

We were northwest bound when the Nodak’er made a U-turn in front of us, forcing us to abruptly stop. He had a pick up pulling a large camper trailer...:th

I am not going to call him old. But he had 35 years on @EJB. He went right to the right shoulder and appeared to be stopping my personal driver was going by him when he decided to pull back into the lane nearly smucking my side the car... we got by him and he stopped in the lane to get out and pick a hubcap off the road.. now that I realize how much hubcaps are worth to NoDak’ers I am thinking of venturing up to Ketojenns and trade her a ton of old hubcaps for gold...

We were privileged enough to be in the pigeon room for a while. Interesting little birds. We were not served squab as promised...

Went on a futile mushroom hunt. I demonstrated my skills at identifying plants and trees..... :gig

Last thing we learned was Holm’s brother needs to work on his exhaust system repair techniques.:lau

When we got back to Mnchickmom’s a strange then occurred, while she was around back Hoover came running up to me and asked for asylum. Saying he could not stand it there anymore. So he snuck into the back of my van and rode home with me. He is now living in hiding in my shed.

I am not sure how long he will live here this time. His record for keeping out of trouble and living at one place is a little on the shabby side..

Who knows where he will go next.

Thanks, I know it is a risk of free ranging, just really odd to have it happen seven in one day, then seven the next. I know foxes might get one or two, but I can't think they are taking seven in one shot.

Roughly six months without issue, then poof in such a short time.

Don't forget about 2 legged predators
any neighbors that suddenly had a barbeque?
