Swedish Flower Hen Thread

I haven't a clue I'd say mid October sunsets around 7:30 as of now, boy I hope I get some eggs before next spring out of em buncha bums at the moment.
Ya, I would call them a bunch of bums to. At least they try top mow the yard and do some pest control.

@SOHC-FTW

Here are some examples of the chicks I am growing out. The larger ones are about 12+/- weeks and the smaller ones 8+/- weeks. These are all from Spoticus pen who is a black base mille from a @KYTinpusher egg and hens from Bartel Farms German line pen. There are 2 blue base SL in there also. I've hatched out about 50 in the past few months, so this is just a sample.

Also in thinking about it, I wasn't sure if you knew some of the signs that laying is approaching. So just in case... The pullets combs and waddles should redden up significantly. When you quickly put your hand over their back, they will squat (some never will). And they usually start showing interest in the lay boxes especially with fake eggs. I see them moving around the straw and even rolling the fakes underneath them. It's seriously adorable!

When they get startled you may get an egg song. And often times the egg song gets practiced. For me, I often find soft shelled eggs on the poo board or around the yard in random places as someone is coming into lay. Also I find these indicators have begun up to 1 month before I start seeing the eggs appear. Of course that varies.
If I have already shared these signs with you, sorry for repeating myself. So many things in my head

Good evening folks! Just peeking in, everyone has such lovely girls!! I'm super stoked, me and my partner just decided that the SFH were the perfect dual purpose breed to suit the needs of our Micro Farm! :) I'll definitely be in once we get our girls to show off their progress. Does anyone have particular recommendations or leads on where to find them started? I want to order a bunch of chicks, but I definitely want to get some juvs as well if I could find them close enough to Florida!

I'm ready to get more especially off her.
Yeah I know about most of the signs and my gals are bright red, oh well it'll happen when it happens lol.

:welcome

I hope you find someone close that'll sell you juvies. Do you incubate? If so, I could ship you eggs. I also do custom hatching and shipping of chicks. It's getting kind of late in the season and I'm in Michigan. Definitely keep me in mind for Spring. My Facebook page is: Facebook.com/MyFlowerFarm

You'll love this breed. In fact, there is nothing NOT to love. They are beautiful, no two are alike, they are friendly, etc. Oh, but they ARE addicting :)

I'll definitely have to like and follow your page!!

Unfortunately, our farm is actually very much in the 'deveplopment' phase, we just inherited 4 acres in North florida, and while the property is gorgeous, we won't be putting birds on the grounds until all of our coops/runs are constructed and predator proofed (especially because, well, I really love this breed, I'd be devastated to lose any!) Anyways, I'm rambling, the point being, at the moment, we do not incubate, but do plan on purchasing incubators as part of our initial investment, since we do plan on being a fully functional poultry production farm within our first few years of operation. :) They are quite striking birds, their gorgeous appearance AND their production capabilities were just too great to overlook, although my hubby did see some German birds on Greenfires website, and well, we're locked antler-to-antler about it (We'll probably end up getting both!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Hope things go well on your micro farm. As much fun as it is, I know it's hard work as well. Usually a labor of love.

SFH were an accidental find for me, and a huge blessing!

I also am using them for DP, but still growing out. Haven't found anything I don't like about them so far. I especially love that you can maintain a pure breed and still have a variety of eye candy and be able to tell them apart. They don't seem too aggressive to each other or people. But also not too laid back to put themselves in danger. I would be surprised if you don't enjoy them as much as the rest of us do. Beware of chicken math!
