Hi, welcome to BYC!![]()
Hope things go well on your micro farm. As much fun as it is, I know it's hard work as well. Usually a labor of love.
SFH were an accidental find for me, and a huge blessing!I also am using them for DP, but still growing out. Haven't found anything I don't like about them so far. I especially love that you can maintain a pure breed and still have a variety of eye candy and be able to tell them apart. They don't seem too aggressive to each other or people. But also not too laid back to put themselves in danger. I would be surprised if you don't enjoy them as much as the rest of us do. Beware of chicken math!![]()

The girl I got mine from had a few different breeds. And she said the laying was on par with white leghorns or better. And they dressed out well (don't know weight), faster than Orpington that although large take longer to get to size. Hers' were very nice looking. In my group there is quite a bit of diversity in size as well as friendliness, personality, color.... I ended up with 3 pullets and 5 cockerels. 1 of my pullets is so small she wouldn't be suited well for meat. But another one is such good size I was afraid she might be a roo. At this point though, no questions she has got a nice sized frame.I would love to hear your thoughts on how they continue to grow /dress once processed, my partner has begun to lose faith in the SFH, and well, I'd like to show him up!![]()
We're very fortunate that my partners grandfather (who is thankfully still with us, bless him) actually is signing over his entire property to us, since he can no longer care for it, and he knows I spent a pretty penny trying to get an Agricultural education, it's his "gift" to us, we're still in absolute shock at his decision, forever grateful, and infinitely excited to be back in an agricultural environment!!
You have a great variety of colors! At 4 weeks it's way to early to tell color other than the grey ones are called Blues & they will remain mostly. Keep posting pictures in a few more weeks. If you can get head ***** so we can see the combs that will help. Beware there can always be the late developing rooster in the bunch.
Those legs would be considered mottled.
Good evening folks! Just peeking in, everyone has such lovely girls!! I'm super stoked, me and my partner just decided that the SFH were the perfect dual purpose breed to suit the needs of our Micro Farm!I'll definitely be in once we get our girls to show off their progress. Does anyone have particular recommendations or leads on where to find them started? I want to order a bunch of chicks, but I definitely want to get some juvs as well if I could find them close enough to Florida!

Congrats on some lovely little flowers.
Give it a little more time to give a more accurate Guess on sex at this point it's hard to tell (for me) but maybe the first guy and third picture are males. As far as colors that's the beauty of the sfh they change so much even a bit after adult hood enjoy em!
