So, I've read through a lot of pages on this thread, looking for posts about crest genetics. Seems there is a difference of opinions. Is cresting incomplete dom or co-dom?

What is the opinion of those who have been breeding them awhile?

crest are a dominant trait. It only takes one crested Gene to make a crested bird. If you breed two crested Birds together and you end up with a chick that is carrying two copies of the cresting gene then it tends to have an overly large crest and possibly a vaulted skull. a crested bird mated with a non crested bird what produces 50% crested, 50% non crested.

I can see it both ways. Doesn't matter, but I saw a post describing the birds with "eyebrows" as carrying a crested gene.

Didn't think that was the case.

I've had a bunch hatch out with the eyebrows and none of them have ever went on to produce a crested bird unless bred to a crested. I say it is dominant in my experience.

I've yet to breed a single SFH or produce any birds of my own. That's why I wanted opinions here.

Your answer on the eyebrows is kind of what I was wondering about.

you're welcome. I don't think the eyebrows thing has anything to do with the crested gene because even my leghorn roosters have the eyebrows and they have never carried a crested gene.

The whole crested thing just puzzles me. In my CLB, you breed crested to crested with no problem. Yet in some birds, it's lethal.

I'm just one of those people who is always trying to figure out "why?"

very cute! Looks like the front one is a pullet? what are your thoughts on the black one?

I never knew of it to be lethal (only double tufted in Araucana). In the SFH, it doesn't simply stay a nice sized unintrusive crest. So basically if it inhibits their ability to see then it's a problem for a land race breed.

You do raise a good question, if someone knows the answer, I would like to hear..... So in the CLB, crested X crested just equals crested, not poofy. But, regarding SFH.... crested X crested always equals poofy? Or is it still possible to get JUST crested?

I also am a "wanna know why" type person.
