Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Wow! One of my SFH girls did in fact go broody!! :weee   I've been so excited to share with the fellow flower crowd as I know the question was asked recently. :)

Took me almost 4 days to break her. :(  Because it's not the right time for her/me... never mind my other 4 broody's.

And... my broody FBCM successfully hatched 3 bouncing baby flowers! :jumpy  :love  She had them out to pasture at 3 days old. Will post a couple pics later.
Hi. :frow  Sorry you might have been scammed... I have been once before myself, specifically for Flowers before I was more familiar with the breed.

I will say that the colors do change drastically as they age and are completely different from the day they were born. As well as the flowers do start to come in a little later on some of them. Of course there are poor quality birds where people don't care what they breed and so you may not get the pretty flowers associated with them. A black based chick with some white could end up being the Snow Leopard variety. Of course will give a more educated opinion after seeing your pic. Just trying to give the benefit of the doubt. :/

Here'sa few pics.

That may be an Australorp...

I have only been raising SFH just under a year... but that has the wrong leg/beak color. It is not like ANY SFH I've seen. So I am guessing you are correct... that is either not SFH or really terrible selection for breeding. :/

I was just thinking it looked like an australorp, more than a Swedish flower, at any rate.

Did you happen to see the parent stock? Even then when I didn't know what to look for and was just happy to find "SFH" ... I paid $20 each for barn yard mix chicks and drove 45 minutes each way in my suburban with gas price at $4 + per gallon.

Even though I keep my boys separated and mate only who I want to... there has been an occasional escapee... but I'm super "my word counts" so if I know there was a possibility, I avoid hatching/selling during that time. But many are not the super over thinker I am... and I like things to be correct!

Did you get any more?

I'd bought four, 1 Delaware, 2 buff brahmas and the 'Swedish flower'. They were from a feed store. Everyone died, except the latter.

Sorry for your losses... feed stores get their chicks shipped and have losses as well. They *usually* absorb the losses before letting them go to the public.

With them being available at My Pet Chicken... more feed stores will probably be having them... Do you have other chickens? If not, she will want some friends.

Mix ups on gender and breed do happen all the time... when feed stores are handling them or at the hatchery. Their is always the human factor. She probably is an Australorp... they are supposed to be good birds.

There are chickens all over our fenced-in backyard. She's currently living with 8 white leghorn chicks.

Do you have pictures of your 'Swedish Flower'? I have never seen one at the feed store. Curious to see how close it is to what I've come to expect from mine. I know how they advertise Ameraucana, but in fact sell easter eggers. Wonder if it is the same type thing with the Swedish Flower?
