Swedish Flower Hen Thread

Well... the Gunnar babies are 5 weeks old... My husband calls them my Flower Children.

There are at that truly funny looking stage, but I thought I'd post a pic anyway since I knew Bulldogmama would want to see how they are coloring.
They are so curious and adorable... hoping I have at least a few pullets here, but figured I'd wait another few weeks to try to figure that out or I'd drive myself crazy. LOL

Oh... and the dark one at the back is my Rhodebar pullet - just to confuse everyone.

I had the SFH (7 of them) and RB (1 pullet and 6 cockerels) together, but a couple of the RB cockerels were getting pushy so the six RB boys got their own suite and I left the RB pullet with the SFH since they will be living together except for breeding pen time anyway - don't have to worry about later integration that way.

I am sad to report my one sfh pullet disappeared today :( didn't get upset until it was time to tuck the kids in tonight and she wasnt in the chicken pile :(

An update on my sfh disappearing, yesterday afternoon about 330 we came home to find a coyote in the middle of our drive way my husband set up after it while I checked the chickens, it didn't get any of my kiddos! And my husband saved the day and got the coyote!

that was a bold one, glad it won't be bothering you again!

Here are my SFH that I got from Bulldogma and Ki4got:

I'll probably only be keeping one of the darker boys and one in the last pic. the rest will need to go to other places or the freezer. I need to get some females that are darker like the two middle boys.

Are you going to save the beautiful feathers from the Freezer boys? For those of use crafty they would make a good swap item. I love feather earrings.

Mtadkins5, can you post a photo of your brooder? It definitely sounds like you need more ventilation. Could you leave the cover off completely or do they need protection from other pets? If they need protection from your other pets, consider cutting out part of the cover and replacing it with screen or hardware cloth or chicken wire.

I bought this on Ebay for around $16.00.

The top has a zipout screen mesh.

There are two side zipdoors and two pouches on the side with tent stakes to stake it down outside so the wind can't flip it.

There is a zipout bottom so you could use it indoors with litter or outdoors without to graze them.

It all folds up into this case so if you were traveling with birds you could offer them a chance to stretch during the journey if it were a long one. It also has a holder that a rabbit water bottle can fit in and a grommet that the water tube extends through the wall. We all know they drip though. I am working on a way to use modify a rabbit bottle with a chicken nipple.

Hi, I am thinking of hatching some of these chickens in the Spring 14. How dose everyone like there's. How fast do they grow? Are they a noisy chicken? Do they go broody? Are they tolerant of confinement? Are they good free rangers? Are they tasty?
